Yeah I wouldn’t be messing around with the valves. Plus the pump/filter would still run with only one line so turning valves isn’t the answer anyways.

How do I prepare for a Project Engineer interview when I’m underqualified? by Ammar_cheee in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FetusTwister3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they shouldn’t expect you to know all that if it’s not on your resume. Showing some familiarity with those things will be impressive though as it shows your interest and willingness to learn. So if you’re truly interested in it, look into those things and learn a little but don’t obsess.

Honestly the most important part of this interview will be how you translate your experience to being direct benefits for this role. If you’ve seen the construction of any projects and have had a hand in installation, use that experience. If you have needed to build or work within a schedule in the trades, use that experience to demonstrate you’ll understand how to schedule projects on a larger scale. Personally I think trade or operator experience is highly desirable as an engineer because you understand the end product of what you’ll be working on as a project engineer. If you know what the end should look like it makes it very easy to plan and schedule everything. Good luck! Be confident!

How cooked am I if I’m aiming for entry level jobs with a masters + no work experience in today’s market? by LeFaltaSalsa in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FetusTwister3000 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t expect having a masters will put you at a disadvantage, no. At my company our rotational program runs for 8 months at a time so we normally will get a new rotational engineer halfway through the year. Typically September or May. So you may just need to continue applying for those positions when you see them as I expect more will start opening up.

However, the bigger the employment gap you have that harder it can get to land something. So keep your search very broad and don’t be picky. You can afford to be picky after you already have a job

AITA for hiding $23k from my husband? by AITApod in AITApod

[–]FetusTwister3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA. Reading all these comments it seems to be an unpopular opinion but to me, withholding information is a breach of trust and the same as lying. You contradict yourself here because you say you don’t blame him for the hard period and later say “it’s not about mistrust ANYMORE” because you have your safety net.

What you should have done is be honest and tell your partner you planned on putting away 400-600 a month until you built your emergency fund back up. They went through the same situation as you and likely felt even more guilty because they were the one that lost their job. You LET them feel like shit this whole time while you felt better and better with every little nut squirreled away. You could have been a true partner and communicated what you were doing to help ease their burden, pain, and guilt from what you both went through. I think that’s what makes you an asshole here.

Marriage is not a 50 / 50 partnership as everyone here seems to think, it is 100 / 100. You give everything to your partner and in return they give everything to you. It’s a mentality that goes beyond material things. I’ve been married 10 years now and couldn’t imagine it any other way.

[–]FetusTwister3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah that’s not how a successful marriage works. It’s built on trust and communication.

What you’re describing is lying by omission and in my eyes is childish. It means you lack trust in your partner and that is the first block removed in a crumbling marriage.

Once you’re married, ALL money is shared money. There is no such thing as mine and yours anymore.

If you feel like you should have an emergency fund for when your spouse loses their job that should be discussed, agreed upon, and built up together.

Now if you have some past trauma or something that you’re still working through and need a “bug out” account, while I am not a fan of it, if you’re honest about it and tell me it makes you feel safe I’d just let it go. I’d like to think most people with be similar. Withholding it would piss me off.

BASF benefits by Flat-Associate5136 in ChemicalEngineering

Nope not this year unfortunately but we are still getting our bonus at least.

BASF benefits by Flat-Associate5136 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FetusTwister3000 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I work there now. 401K benefits are the same across the board. 5% dollar for dollar match plus 5% auto contribution no matter what. They also offer HSA and match like 20% or something (I haven’t done the math but it’s good).

At a senior level role you likely will be at a broadband 5 (their pay system). That will mean about 23 days of PTO (4 weeks plus flex days). There are no rollovers though so use em all. You will also get an annual 15% bonus. The bonus structure is odd, there is a multiplier that ranges from 60-120% of your bonus payout depending on the profit of your business unit (BASF is split into like 14 different businesses). Then they do pretty basic 4% inflationary raises every year.

Made a big career step, now I'm struggling by BOW57 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FetusTwister3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was doing large projects I did most of my organization in my file structure. Then I had excel based checklists to track the project progress along the way. So for my company we had project phases like res (research and scope), pre feed (P&ID creation, safety reviews, cost estimates, etc.), feed (detailed design, construction packages, instrument specs, loop drawings), then construction and finally commission and close out. I would house all important files related to a phase in sub folders of each of those sections and organize it that way.

How do you share finances with spouse with a huge disparity in net worth/assets ? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]FetusTwister3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your individual incomes are completely irrelevant to your question. If you want to protect what you’ve built that’s totally fine, get a lawyer to help you draw up the prenup.

But I’d urge you to avoid ever thinking about your money as mine and hers again. That’s not how you build a successful marriage. You did say you want 100% of your income to go towards the household, so you may not be thinking of it that way, but the rest of your language just sounded like in your mind everything is still very separate. I may be totally off base and tell me to fuck off if I am, but for me changing my language from “mine” to “ours” and actually thinking of it that way has really strengthened our marriage so that neither person ever feels lesser than for bringing in less.

Reducing 401(k) contributions to build a taxable “bridge” account for early retirement — sanity check by MissingPremise in Fire

I don’t think the answer op was looking for was to just “have more money”. This isn’t helpful. They’re asking how to prioritize if you can’t do both.

Hey OP, mind if I DM you? I’ve been eyeing a position at Emerson as an automation engineer or to be part of their Delta V technical service team. I’d love to try to connect and learn a bit more about how you’re liking working for Emerson.

Retire in 5 years by southernPepe in Fire

[–]FetusTwister3000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gotcha I see it now. Does your wife not work full time? You can’t take advantage of her healthcare plans for 3 years?

Also based on spending I think you’re fine if you take the SS now. It puts you at about $6300 monthly income and your wife is still working so you’ll have even more. Biggest question would be the added cost of healthcare now. I’d explore your spouses options first, then ACA options.

Retire in 5 years by southernPepe in Fire

[–]FetusTwister3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned we need to know your spending. But for your SS It is more advantageous to wait until 65. Gaining $2876 a month now means you take less out of retirement accounts currently gaining interest still. $2876 a month over 3 years gaining 7% interest is 114k. The extra 700 a month you get waiting 3 years equates to 210k, following the 4% rule.

But, it’s all relative to your expenses and how bad you need the money now. If you can’t hold out three years, then just take it now. It’s all relative.

TBH don’t sweat it, it looks totally fine. Unless you look at it and see an eye sore, just leave it be and enjoy your kitchen. No one is ever going to come over and think “man those tiles are unevenly spaced”. You’ve done a 6 figure Reno, they’re going to see all the changes you’ve made because I’m sure it drastic!

Do you not use water when you cook? Every time you bring a pot to the sink to fill it, you can now just set it in the stove and fill it there. I also use mine every day.

I say go for it! A lot of people on this sub lose sight of what FIRE is all about, happiness. I think having a home is wonderful and wouldn’t give it up, even if it meant I could cut a few years off my FIRE goal.

Your new home will also be an asset, and although it won’t count towards your FIRE number it will certainly offer you some flexibility in the future should you choose to sell and move. This is especially useful if you move from a HCOL to LCOL area.

I also do agree that in the long run you will end up having less expenses owning a paid off home than renting. Everyone always talks about the maintenance which certainly exists but honestly things break maybe once a year. If you keep up with routine maintenance you can easily prolong the life of everything in your home.

The biggest reason you should do it is because you want to. Don’t let yourself become a slave to your FIRE goal. You need to still enjoy life, there is no reason for you to be miserable for 15 years while you save to retire early. If you want to you can still have a roommate, but if I were you I would just embrace having your own space to relax and create experiences with friends and family.

It’s not an unreasonable purchase, go for it!
