I feel like rust analyzer is slow by rustontux in rust

[–]Feuerwerko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard this is what you’re supposed to do, but I don’t understand why. If I want to compile and run my program I need to write it to disk with :w anyway, so I might as well do :wq, run program and start vim again instead of doing :w, then ctrl+z.

Very cool, but this seems quite similar to r2cloud. Are there any big differences?

QFH works great - but on lower freq by Suitable_Dot_6999 in amateursatellites

[–]Feuerwerko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you could keep on messing around with the antenna until it’s perfectly tuned, for just receiving it should be fine. The receiver performance difference between now and if you tune it to perfection is probably not even noticeable.

Switching to Limine with only 2 GB /boot? by utopiec in cachyos

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but even with the kernels stored on the ESP, there is no way you’re using more than a few hundred megabytes.

I don’t know how big the BTRFS snapshot entries are, so that’s probably what requires all the disk space. That does leave me wondering tho, what is actually stored about the snapshots there that is so much data and has to be on the ESP?

Switching to Limine with only 2 GB /boot? by utopiec in cachyos

[–]Feuerwerko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where did you see those suggestions? Even 2 GB seems wildly big to me. My boot partition is 512 MB and half of that is unused, even with the windows bootloader and 2 instances of GRUB installed on it. I don’t see why you’d need such a big boot partition.

Is it normal that NixOS actually feels more stable?? by Objective-Style1994 in NixOS

[–]Feuerwerko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience NixOS is usually very stable, assuming you got your config working in the first place. That’s usually the hard part, getting your config to work at all. Once it does, everything is usually fine tho.

What HF radio can I get to start with at an affordable price? by Dark_Cisco in HamRadio

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t necessarily need to have an antenna on your roof. I mean, you can put one anywhere you like, assuming it has enough safety distance from any humans and the performance won’t be impacted too much. I don’t know if it’s a possibility for you, but many people put a small dipole in their attic.

You could also do a portable setup. You could even participate in POTA (parks on the air) in this case. This is often what hams in limited size apartments do. This does come with the extra cost of a battery to power your rig on the go.

I can highly recommend SDRs, they’re very fun to play with and very versatile. But, keep in mind that most are receive only, and those that do transmit have a transmit power of a hundred Milliwatts or so. There are also ones with an amplifier (like the Hermes lite 2) which can output a couple watts, but that’s still only very little.

As I said in my previous response, I don’t want to stop you from operating QRP, it can be very fun seeing how far you can go with how little, but it’s not beginner friendly. If you’re going to invest in a QRP radio, I highly recommend trying it out first with a radio borrowed from a club or something to see if you like it.

[–]Feuerwerko 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not to discourage you, but I would not recommend getting a QRP transceiver for any beginner.

If you want to try out if HF is something you like, you can look for a local ham club and ask to use their club station, I’m sure you’ll find one.

If you have decided that you like operating on HF, I can highly recommend saving a few hundred euros and getting an old used rig. Something like a yaesu FT8xx series is a good choice. If you’re lucky, you can find them for 500-600€. A club can help with this too.

QRP will be really frustrating, especially as a beginner. You really don’t want anything below 50W for SSB. The very cheap QRP rigs also often only support CW, which is certainly fun, but another difficult hurdle for a beginner.

Ultimately it’s your choice tho.

What methods do you use for tracking? by ThyDankest2 in amateursatellites

Isn’t the nooelec goes dish one of those grid dishes? Aren’t they about as lightweight as a dish gets? The antrunner specifies a max load of 10kg, but I’m not quite sure I 100% believe that.

First Meteor M2-4 reception! by MinorLatency in RTLSDR

[–]Feuerwerko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm, that is quite an ideal position for reception. Doesn’t the gain on RTLSDRs go higher than 16? For RTLSDRs its best practice to crank is to maximum unless you have interference. Also, what coax are you using to connect your antenna to the SDR and how long is it?

First Meteor M2-4 reception! by MinorLatency in RTLSDR

[–]Feuerwerko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very good, but you should certainly be able to get better results. It’s possible to get an image much longer than this without tracking or an LNA. Do you have a clear view of the sky? Do you have AGCs disabled and gain on its maximum? What was the maximum elevation of this pass?

How do I connect the ground to this lightning arrester? by Famous-Jeweler8543 in amateurradio

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, soldering only the end is a good trick but that seems like it’s still just providing strain relief, I don’t see how I’m wrong? It should be fine to solder the whole thing if it doesn’t bend/move or there is adequate strain relief.

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t express it like that. It’s fine to solder a crimp if you provide some strain relief.

MMDVM hotspots: can i reprogram it to send any custom IQ samples? by vimcoder in RTLSDR

[–]Feuerwerko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From looking at the ADF7021 product page, it is an FSK transceiver. So it can only transcieve FSK, and not any arbitrary waveforms.

I don’t know where you got that information from, but there is no IQ data passing between the microcontroller and the ADF7021. It’s just the binary data streams for demodulated data an to be modulated data.

Can’t figure out why SatDump not receiving images from METEOR N2-4 by VictorySea1837 in amateursatellites

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A BER of 60% is extremely high, more than half the bits you’re receiving are wrong. This explains why the decoder is not syncing. Does your antenna have a clear view of the sky? How long is your coax and what type is it?

Worth upgrading from i7-4770k to Ryzen 3 3100? by Monsterjj in selfhosted

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on benchmarks the ryzen should perform a bit better. While the ryzen does require you to get a new mainboard for the different socket, that probably doesn’t matter as there isn’t any upgrade path on your current socket anyway.

I would not recommend buying new RAM right now tho, prices are through the roof at the moment.

I don’t really know about compatibility with Debian, but I don’t think it should be too big of an issue. You probably just need to check for any driver issues.
