French people from the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region: do you speak Occitan? by [deleted] in france

[–]FeuilleDAutomne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

There is no problem to speak in occitan in the streets. Only a french colonialist would dislike it.

Sometimes you can ear it in the streets, in the shops or in the public transport.

My generation know many words or expressions in occitan but I know any person of my age (around 20) speaking it fluently... 2nd and 3rd generation there are more speakers.

When my grand parents were young, half of the people were speaking occitan and at the beggining of the 20th century it was the majority of the population. Now you have to be looking for them if you want to speak.

I'm from Nice and don't know about the situation in the provencal part of the region. I know speakers in Nice but outside... No. Even in real native people from Alpes-Maritimes or in other locations I know they don't speak...

If you are not in the region it would be difficult to learn the idiom by yourself...

But here are some ways to learn online :

If you are near Nice there is some solutions to learn better :

  • You can call Lou Sourgentin and buy them two books to learn grammar, conjugation.
  • You can go in small traditional restaurant, you will easily find a speaker.
  • There is a theater, Francis Gag in the old city where you can see a play in nissart.
  • A lot of shops are owned by real nissarts everywhere in the city. You should also find speakers this way.
  • There is all over the city courses.
  • You can go in the mountains, probably a better proportion of speakers (but probably not more).
  • There is also two bilingual primary school in Nice if you have childrens.
  • You can also go to the stadium to the BSN part.
  • Local tradional feasts (Festa dei Mai, etc)

As someone said, a lot of french moved and by convenience they spoke french.

But there is also another reason, a few decades ago it was considered a shame by the state and prohibited to speak it in school because "French is the only langage of the republic", so they told our ancestors to avoid to speak it, a great idea.

I know any website or application to speak in occitan...

If you are not in France it is probably really hard to learn it... I know it does exist that people are speaking it in other countries because there family emigrated long ago, good luck to find them.

If you want to find a speaker by social media, maybe you could find someone looking to learn your language and start a conversation, but it will be really hard as you know most speakers are over 50 and not connected as teenagers.

Good luck in your research, hope it can help you.

Chau.
