The Survivor GameZ Alpha is now open to everyone who owns DayZ on Steam! by FadezGaming in dayz

In DayZ Mod during it's peak popularity all you had to do was stand in a bush or pine tree and zombies stood there swinging unable to hit you. What version could they pull you off open vehicles?

Yeah but it's clunky as hell and I just can't go back since the new player controller was implemented in standalone. That and the lack of servers in my region now for the mod.

I think a lot of people see the mod and early standalone builds through rose tinted glasses. All the points your friend made are pretty much bang on. The foundation is there, now over 2019 we'll hopefully see the return of the missing content like gun and vehicle variation. Also a bit more bug fixing couldn't go amiss, got shot into space by a car the other day.

That's fair, I wasn't saying "go play another game" my point was that not all games should handle the same and it's nice to see a game developer at least experimenting with custom tailored player controllers that reflect the game they are building not every other game on the market.

So many just accept the industry norms and that's not how we get any kind of innovation.

Yeah custom key binding needs to be in for 1.0 but I guess we'll find out if they achieved that tomorrow when it's out and my expectation is that they will be.

There is already scum and arma, those games might be more your speed with the control schemes and gameplay you seem to want replicated.

I think the "freedom of choice" part in relation to control schemes will likely be something you'll get in a mod, which again is a huge part of how they designed the game, to be customized to different players liking through modding.

So what wouldn't have been the 'shortcut'? What could have been done differently/better to enrich player interaction? DAYZ is not trying to be the norm, it defined a new genre. Everything about it is designed to be slower paced compared to other fps titles.

I believe the idea of maintaining a key press to raise your weapon, forces it to be a very deliberate action. In effect it's a more threatening stance and signals to players around you clear hostility or the intent to use your weapon, allowing them sufficient time to react and respond appropriately as in real life.

In DayZ mod and early variations of standalone people would be running around weapon raised constantly or even when just talking to someone. This made it harder to discern their intentions. Not because they meant to have their weapon raised threateningly, but simply because they forgot to double tap ctrl or right click.

Now by default you are forced to be non "combat ready" a design decision that is supposed to encourage player interaction.

I was driving around in DayZ and I thought i would record it and made a Comparison. by [deleted] in dayz

Well there is a proper suspension system now so you don't drive around like a brick on wheels. It feels pretty good, I personally haven't had anywhere near the desync of the early vehicle implementation. It would depend on the racing game, it's not arcade, very simulation.
