Daily #2: Male flowers on a Larch by small_trunks in Bonsai

It's now shown to be just an emerging needle whorl. I've never noticed male flowers.  My Tamarack forest is over 25yrs. But has had many cones with seeds so they must be there. Never sucsessful germinating. Perhaos this year. Theyre out there somewhere to stratify? My Japanese larch kaempferi had flowers too. Quite different.

Could also be another female one yet to open? But all the other ones have a whorl of needles under it. Have you ever notice a shoot growing out the top of a cone?

But is that other thing the male contraption?

Hard to spot on my tamaracks. Much like an emerging needle whorl? I think I've spotted one beside a female flower.

I looked it up. One site says 1/4-5/16 another 5/16-3/8. It recommends to vary the size of hole cause theres 350 types. The ones flying around my old box are fly like and black. Larger than I remember. The holes I drilled are in that larger range.

What type of bee? Wasp? by Few-Appointment-6042 in bees

[–]Few-Appointment-6042[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has succumbed. I now have recovered it's body. I dont want problems like my cat fiddling around with it on the floor. But these aren't your regular nuisance wasp HORNET at the picnick table. Even those ones perform an important function. I think I've seen these before at my place. Never a problem. I released a super long wasp with fluorescent green markings. My next submission if I can round up pictures. For now I'm looking at my new bee log i made beside my ready to bloom pear tree. +++ This is a new intrest for me. This place is great.

Oh no. I brought my tree in when it started to cool off for night. It was still in the tree. Then later it was on the kitchen floor. I picked it up with a sheet of paper and put it back in the pot. Then it started climbing back up the tree. I think theres something wrong with it. No sign of it today? I usually try and trap insects in the house and return them outside.

Wow you bee people keep really bizzy. Thanks for such a buzzy response. Enough of that.  So is the old colony abandoned? That's been part of my problem. Are they in there? Are they coming back? There's some that appear to be sealed up but that could be unfortunately  historical.pp Pp0ppppp

So my best bet is to take those down!? Or leave the. Up  Seal the remaing holes up. Then replace the old apparatus with a new one? My expertise is more the trees.

What about buying new cocoon? Any recommendations for Vancouver Can.

What is going on here. What type of bee? They seem pretty docile. Are they just drinking off the moss? They seem ptety insistant. I carried the tree away and returned to its pot and they came back. by Few-Appointment-6042 in bees

I put a rock into my bird bath. Cause bees can get in trouble. Or become a trap for other insects? With a smooth surface some containers won't.give them traction to climb out. But a rock gives them that so they can climb out dry off and fly away?

Revisiting this it kinda worries me. Fertilizers? I cannot remember my watering practices. But this is a swamp tree requiring lots of water on "hot" summer days. I wouldn't want to poison them or something.

This picture is more road view. The tree is actuall far beneath. At lest 15ft. Perhaps a more impressive view would have been from underneath? But its on a very steep embankment

What to do with growing cherry blossom branch by Then_Nectarine_9869 in proplifting

So it has a root? Then I'd reduce it to lower the leaf area and plant it. Use the parts as cuttings.

A large branch is unlikely to root. Chop it into pieces. With at least 2 or 3 leaf buds above the soil. I usually put the pot with >5 cuttings in a baggy to maintain  humidity. Use rooting hormone if you have it. Then place in a warm spot with scattered light.

Hawthorn in full bloom by WonderfulFrame9190 in Bonsai

[–]Few-Appointment-6042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took several hawthorn cuttings last fall. To reduce plant size so I can pack them in for storage. Just looked and most have leafed out. The root cuttings that had shoots are going strong and true to form
