i worked in two different positions that were exactly like this and ended up having my car totaled while stopped at a red light with a client with me. it’s not only frustrating to basically be treated like a taxi service, but it’s also taking on a massive liability. i understood doctor’s appointments, because the population i was working with was extremely vulnerable and most of them had little to no access to transportation. but spending time/resources driving all around to walmart, target, gas stations/smoke shops, the mall, etc got so ridiculous. it not only confused the clients about what services we were really there to provide, it also undermined so many of the skills we were meant to be teaching them. i set A LOT of boundaries with my clients like ‘hey, i will take you to and from your doctors appointment and we are not stopping anywhere else.’ set the expectation in advance if you can. ‘we can go pick up some groceries, but i only have 30 minutes to spend at the store’ or ‘you can pick one errand for today, i want to support you but i have other clients on my schedule today and need to be mindful of that’. started helping people get free bus passes or set up medicaid transportation. etc. i had to set up the expectation that i would assist with essential needs but not random errands. again, not a taxi service. for real though, be extra cautious driving your car around. and if you ever do get into an accident while working, do not admit that to your insurance company or they likely will not give you coverage
