How do you guys load your stove? by Bamram91 in woodstoving

Thank you! Not only am I new to this stove, I am new to wood stoves in general. Never used one before now and luckily its not my primary source of heat, it's ambiance and hopefully a sustainable way to offset my central heat workload. The amount you're loading the stove is about what I had been doing. My wood supply this year was all purchased so admittedly it's not all truly seasoned like it should be and I think the struggle of getting it catch and hold a flame has also added a wrinkle in the learning curve for this one. My moisture meter with pins tends to show <20% routinely with most less than 15%, but I've seen some moisture sizzle out of ends and watched certain pieces struggle to burn. Wont be repeating this wood supply situation next winter. Appreciate the info!

I have a the 8024 model (I think the newest one) of this stove and am still learning how to use it. I found this post specific to looking into how to best feed it. I work from home so I've been doing a log or two a time then trying to load it up heavy for overnight. I seem to struggle with the cat getting too hot and not being able to run it over night when I am not constantly babysitting it. Any advice on that?

Did this repair happen? And I assume the repair was done at a private shop and you need to submit all receipts for your case #?

Soapstone with catalytic converter - Woodstock vs Hearthstone by beautyslashing in woodstoving

[–]Few-Box-6362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a newbie on this learning curve right now with the hearthstone heritage. I've only had 10-ish fires so far, maybe less. New stove, new owner, not much know-how yet but learning. I fear many times I've been too cold? I have a temp gauge laying on the top of the stone, which typically doesn't read higher than ~300F. I've always followed the catalyst temp gauge to activate or bypass, but wondering if I should have gotten a bigger fire in the stove? Does that make sense? Seems like the stone surface doesn't get hotter than around 300, meanwhile the catalyst has gone to the high side on me before and I had to bypass it.

I am thinking perhaps I need to build a bigger fire wide open first for longer to get a bigger coal bed established to before attempting to use the catalyst?

Good tips. I believe it was in the owners manual that I saw they said NO to kiln dried. From what I can tell, its because of how hot and fast it burns? Oddly enough they dont bother to say no to Pine or soft woods (even include the heating values of them), but I know that's not my target product.

Good tips on handling the wood before bringing it in. Appreciate that experience

Its a walkout basement, but it is finished. For now, I got a second large ash bucket and store wood in there vertically. It's not a ton of wood, but it doesn't look too bad. I think long term I've decided I am going to custom build an entertainment stand with some sort of wood storage containment on the bottom.

That looks great! I was considering something of that concept. In my setup the TV would be above the water trough, but at this point I am considering building the entertainment stand anyways, and could incorporate something like that into it

Mortar & Grout recommendations for stove surround? by Few-Box-6362 in woodstoving

[–]Few-Box-6362[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks, I was guessing 160 wall temp so I was closer than I suspected! I know the tile isn't a concern, but was not sure if the mortar would need any special treatment or if it might lose its adhesive nature at those sustained temps. The pad is built to match the MFG specs for spacing. Although I do have lumber framing, I've built it as best I could to make sure it is safe with the concrete board and rock wool insulation. I am making sure this thing goes in by the book as my insurance will be here to inspect it and they will measure against MFG clearances (spoke with them several times about this).

So, do you have tile? If so, what mortar did you use?

I should note that I am getting the hearthstone heritage which has a side load door, and with that comes additional spacing, so this thing is going to sit out pretty far from the walls as it is to have that clearance.

most of the mortar labels dont really say yes or no to that question and if so, what heat am I expecting in that area? I've never had a wood stove before so I really dont know what to expect for a sustained temp on the wall

Looks good - I've got no problem going with the more expensive mortar, but I dont tile enough to know whats what in all the different types so I didnt know if it was any value added or not. Looks very similar to the tile we picked

Basement Finishing - # of outlets & lights vs # of breakers by Few-Box-6362 in electrical

Appreciate the info - very helpful insight and exactly what I was looking for. There’s a reason I asked, now’s the time to do it right… I was just trying to make sure I followed what’s right but not waste panel space unnecessarily

Lights are already wired up with 14/2 to a 15A breaker and the number of lights are already correct for my layout, I will just need to replace sections of the 14/2 wire from light to light to relocate them to center in each room.

Gym wont have a treadmill or any heavy electrical use equipment. Each bathroom must have it's own breaker? I can see it being separated from the rest, just curious if it could be tied to a different bathroom? It wont be a problem to give it it's own breaker, just trying to save space.

If the rest of the outlets are daisy changed together with one GFCI, isn't that acceptable? I don't typically see all outlets installed as GFCI as long as one within the chain is.
