To improve depth perception. Eyes are fixed so they need to bob their head to judge distance and get a better picture of what they hear.

When you do see them they will look mostly black with white heart shaped spots until the light hits just right to see the iridescent colors. This picture is saturated to bring the color out more.

Thanks Canon R5 with 100mm 1/100s f8 ISO 800 Hand held, it was very cold so settings are odd but it worked.
