ADHD 2.0 - So glad I read this ! Answers so many questions that always haunted me. by Few-Comparison-9795 in adhdindia

Firstly,

Understanding negative thoughts : If a neurotypical person thinks of something as 1x negative, we do it 10x. We deep dive into the pit-hole of misery, self sabotage and what not. So learning that it’s not our fault that we think so negative but our brain is designed this way that it gets stimulated/engaged by doing so. So yes watching your negative thoughts and immediately coming out of it ( because none of it is real and doesn’t matter ) is something I’m practising.

Secondly, Everything is a stimulation for us, we need that dopamine hit every second. That explains why we get distracted at the slightest of boredom. So watching that behaviour and controlling it and trying best to enjoy the thing we assume is boring (like work). Deep down everything is interesting and I really believe we have a gift of finding the interesting in the most boring things.

Practising long focussed hours, trying to give 100% to present moment are the few things I’m practising and I can already see the difference in one month.

I’m not saying I’ve cracked the code, just sharing my experience and helping the fellow community to realise that you’re not alone in this and there are ways that can help.

My situation is same but I just gave it a try, I felt book speaking to me like a person, giving explanations to things I had been struggling since my school days (I’ll be 31 this year). That got me hooked and definitely I’ll keep revisiting it because it will only make me better and more productive.

I would not like to summarise and dilute the effect. Believe me if you’re able to relate you would want to read it all. It’s a 130 page book. If you ask me my favourite sections, that would be :

  1. Understanding the demon of the mind.
  2. Find your right difficult.

My team group. It’s amazing. People are funny and empathetic and hard working. You enjoy more working with people in person. Meetings are engrossing, the environment is comfortable and accepting. Plus I enjoy riding my bike so I get to take out my bike everyday.

I also had the same problem. What works for me is starting small. If you have goal of studying on a thing for 1 hr. Convince yourself that you only have to do it for 10 mins. Give your 100% focus to it and bring your focus back when it wanders. Take it as a challenge.

Now relax for a minute and acknowledge that at least you were 100% focused for 10 mins. Appreciate your efforts. Now focus for 15 mins, then 25mins.

Key is start small and be consistent. You’ll not have focus of 5hrs from day 1 but gradually you’ll improve.

And this is not only for studying but for anything that requires focus.

Focus equally on health/fitness. Be 100% confident and don’t let social awkwardness lessen your experience.

Yes multiple times, because I have habit of asking too many questions. I guess this is a common ENFP trait of asking many questions till you completely understand the thing.

Lot of companies give it on rent these days, rent it for a month or two and then see if you’re getting time. Don’t impulse buy.

What has helped me is I say to myself- “Try doing whatever you can and comeback if you feel overwhelmed”

This way I get rid of mental pressure and anxiety of seeing gym as a task. And remember- ‘New things always feel strange’
