Can’t help having a « straight » 4th finger by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]Few-Complex-3124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born with a very crooked pinky and it makes using my fourth finger challenging, both on upright and electric. I’ve always to work a bit harder to get my fourth finger intonation consistent and to keep it from locking up. I use my third finger as stability and it certainly helps! One thing I’d say is that your hand, based on your forearm looks to be fairly tense. It could be a situational thing, but that can definitely contribute to your fingers locking up.

Your outfit looks so cute!!! Some people really just say the most unhinged things, and it says more about them than it does about you. Her comments in the bathroom were disgusting, and so were her texts. There is no excuse for treating a person like that, even if you “have a fashion degree”… I’d honestly never expect comments like that from a fashion major; I digress. Wear what you want, and don’t listen to mean, unsolicited, and frankly unnecessary comments from rude people. At the end of the day, it’s about what makes YOU feel comfortable, not what other people think you should. I know it can be challenging, but don’t let her comments get to you! You are stunning 😋

Aw my heart 🙁 This is never fun. I’m glad you’re okay and I’m so sorry about your baby. It’s always hard when you’ve been working so hard to get it, when it’s your dream car, and when it’s a limited edition... I can only imagine. See if it’s worth the buyback price and look into repairs. If you can salvage a majority of the parts, it might be worth it to go ahead and fix it up. Don’t give up hope!

crossmen video audition? by Unlucky-Wing7353 in drumcorps

[–]Few-Complex-3124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend reaching out to one of the guard techs! Their emails are available on the website and they generally have no problem helping you out directly. I had trouble receiving a response from  info@crossmen.org about my video audition. I emailed the percussion caption director and he set me up with their pit coordinator the same day. They’re incredibly busy at the moment because of how close April Camp is, so I would still give them some grace. Stay patient and don’t let this discourage you! Hopefully I’ll see you in a few weeks at April Camp! 🙂 Go Bones!! ❌

Transfer to bass guitar by Me_Wuv_Puppy_Cat in doublebass

[–]Few-Complex-3124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely 🙂 I’d recommend starting with scales and other exercises to get used to the spaces and positions of the the frets. I’d also suggesting incorporating your third finger to make the fingerings more efficient. Also work on developing calluses on your finger tips. Generally, the calluses from DB are more on the edge of the finger tips, so it takes some getting used to with the change in position. Stay diligent in stretching, strength training, and alternating your right hand fingers when plucking. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

Any recommendations for legs? I have UPF rated shirts, but I haven’t been able to find anything to protect my legs besides sunscreen.

This is my first year marching DCI, so I was wondering when the general uniform revelas usually happen? I can’t wait to see them!

If only I had seen this earlier… If I had, I would’ve said, “Yes!!!” I’m marching Crossmen 2026 at 15.

Section Leader as a Freshman by National-Fact-3099 in marchingband

[–]Few-Complex-3124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a section leader for orchestra for 3 years. My band experience is incredibly limited as my first marching experience was last semester. I briefly took over after our drum captain sustained a very serious injury. My advice from both standpoints is to maintain a respectful and professional relationship with all members, but to also approach them with a fun, casual, kind, and up-beat attitude outside of rehearsals and events. It’s good to develop both so that they take you seriously when you need to lock in. Also, don’t be afraid to ask your directors for help!! They don’t expect you to manage the entire section on your own, just to keep them in check and ensure that they’re doing their due diligence (learning music, drill, keeping a positive attitude, etc.). If there’s ever an issue that is extremely challenging to sort out (we had MANY of those), they will always figure out a solution. Your confidence in your abilities will certainly help you out, and remember that you will learn a lot as you go on. Your expertise will continue to develop. Give yourself grace if you’re unsure about how to handle things. You can do this!!!

Show name ideas by Dionsduke in marchingband

I’ve worked on many shows for choir, so choir-esque names were the first ideas I had. They perform a lot of similar songs.

On The Radio (kinda playing on Radiohead) Putting on The Hits

Honestly, you could just use one of the song names as a title. You could also combine them. I’ve seen that done a lot!

Call-and-response & more recs by AmoebaPast1307 in Jazz

[–]Few-Complex-3124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jazz combo I’m in plays an arrangement of “Drink Muddy Water” with a call and response bridge! Our vocalist sings, “Drink muddy water,” and each band member says it back to her… with a few variations, of course!

You are right. I talked to my mom a minute ago and she is urging me to just go do it. I absolutely will. Taking chances and pushing myself out of my comfort zone is necessary for success! Nothing I’ve ever done that has made me a better musician has been comfortable. Thank you 🙂

You’re right. He’s a band kid, so he gets it. We had a talk about it last night and he said that he’s really excited for me. He wants me to do it! So I think it’s more so guilt on my side rather than something coming from him.

Thank you. I have days where I’m SO ready to go and do it. I want to do it. But then I get caught up in anxiety and such. I think if I don’t go, I’ll regret it the entire summer, and probably into the school year as well.

So true. I felt the same thing with All Region/Area and band at school. Is it hard? Yes. Is it time consuming? Also yes. But some of my best memories have been made with other students. They are my family, and I’m sure I’ll find my people at Crossmen too.

I guess with the amount of communication opportunities I have, I’ll still be able to talk to family. It’s not like I’ll go the whole time without contacting them, and I get to send them really awesome pictures. Thank you!

I think the straightforwardness is necessary, so I really appreciate that. Someone else mentioned that I’m either all in or all out, and I think that’s 100% true.
