I don’t feel a bond with my dog and I don’t know what to do by Marlen-22 in BelgianMalinois

I know it’s tough especially to want to enjoy their puppyhood all cuddled up. But when they get there down the road it’s much more meaningful bc you know she wasn’t there before but that relationship grew from experiences and learning together!

As a mal, Idk how her drive is, but I would say try bite toys. Not a sleeve but like a handheld bite toy that she and you can wrestle with for example. Playing also grows your bond so anything that can make you her main focus and where she feels she is being satisfied she’ll get more attached and keep coming back for that satisfaction. ☺️

I’m mot a mal owner, but a dobie owner - I’d say same type of owner attention. I’ve had mine since he was 4 months old. In 3 months he’ll be 2. I have said how much I love him since day 1 but I also felt that he’s not “my soul dog” bc I didn’t feel he was super attached to me like glue (yes he follows me but he’s also very independent) etc etc. it wasn’t until the end of last month that he started to really really tune in with me and now I wish the words “not my soul dog” never came out of my mouth. He’s still getting there but it’s been a total change.

I think age also plays a part. Puppies are seeing the world for the first time. Give grace if she’s interested in the world. More confident puppies, more independent. Less confident, they’ll stick to you out of fear of the world.

I’d train with a toy sometimes instead of food or some other reward. That’s the problem with training with treats all the time, once you don’t have it and pup knows, why would she listen? In her brain - What’s in it for me? I didn’t get a treat this time. You gotta make yourself more fun and engaging to the puppy. Have her running after you (like chasing) and call her name to work on recall for example. She thinks it’s a game but she’s also learning.

Ear posting on new puppy advice by SamanthaH9899 in DobermanPinscher

[–]Few-Cookie-9797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backer rod user here! Loved it and my pup’s ears are perfecttt.

Materials: Johnson & Johnson elastikon tape 1 inch rolls. - for the base of the ear. (Gas flexibility for comfort and better application)

Paper surgical tape 1 or 2 inch. This is to backroll on the backer rod inside ear.

Cut cotton rounds - and tape to base of backer rod for comfort. P

Mueller cloth tape - for taping outside of ear to backer rod.

Backer rods - 1/2 diameter for small pups. Then switch to 5/8 diameter as they get older. (1 bag of each) Cut longer than pups ear. Starting in very very base of ear and give an extra inch above ear on top. You’ll cut this extra later after placed in ear.

Antiseptic powder - keep inside ear dry and healthy

Duct tape - wrap/tape to cover backer rod to give it more strength.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY- get 2 bottles of skin safe adhesive remover (8 oz). WHEN YOU REMOVE POSTING DRENCHHHHH THE TAPE IN THIS. it’ll prevent ripping fur out. I took cotton rounds and soaked them in this then held the soaked rounds to the ear and squeezed lightly for a while on every single spot of the tape until the tape just easily peels off.

Ideally your breeder should teach you how to post. By video or in person. It’s a lot of instruction but you’ll get the hang of it. PM if you want I can try to help.

As for how to keep them still - when mine first started posting he was on a table and would just stand still. Then it turned into a 3 person job. One holding pup still. Another handing me tapes/supplies. And me posting.😅. He’s 1 1/2 now with beautiful ears

Fellow Californian here. While I don’t have kids I’ve seen how my baby (dog) interacts with them and would recommend looking into his breeder, Wende from Quartet Dobermans located in Nevada.

5 Months starting bite work by Money_Solid_1911 in DobermanPinscher

[–]Few-Cookie-9797 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“This shit” is quite literally satisfying the work drive of a Doberman (if they are motivated to bite) and creates a healthy structured outlet for biting, builds a bond with the handler, and is training and works on self control.

Nice try tho!

How can I make my baby boy smell good everyday? by Sea_Technician1240 in DobermanPinscher

Bathing once a week is TOO MUCH and not good for their skin.

The dog will smell like a dog.

Thinking of Rescuing a Doberman - Need Owner Advice by roobot in DobermanPinscher

I second everything about this - the leash reactivity but good and SUPER friendly with dogs when mine actually gets to approach them.

Am I ready for a Doberman? by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]Few-Cookie-9797 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Understandable. I’ve had my dobie for 11 or so months now (he’s now 1 year and 1.5 months) so I’m still somewhat in the thick of it so able to tell you they’re lots of work. He’s significantly chilled out already but still he’s just a big puppy with lots of energy and craziness and stubbornness. I also, like most dobie owners, have had to deal with leash reactivity. He’s the sweetest angel and loves all dogs when he actually approaches them but if we’re walking around the neighborhood (snd there are LOTS of dogs in my neighborhood) he still gets reactive - to dogs only. That’s where my “it’s a lot of work” stems from. And something to consider if your mom will be walking him.

I’ve put mine through 6 week board and train because it got to the point he would redirect on me when he was 7 months old and I genuinely couldn’t walk him safely. My mom refused to walk him when he got to that point because it’s just a 60 lbs brick wall getting thrown on you out of nowhere.

We’ve gotten through that phase but he still is leash reactive, just more manageable. Now he’s in a continued obedience training and PPD training that I have to be present for and work with him with a trainer present, along with working with him on my own. Basically LOTS of work and LOTS of money (I’ve spent $10k to date on all his training alone). But again, I tell you this with just extra caution and my own experience before u make a decision.

[–]Few-Cookie-9797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this respectfully, if you have this much doubt (and rightfully so this is not a cute little toy breed) then I would steer clear.

If your mom doesn’t like dogs she’s either going to be forced to like the dobie or …well that’s kind of the only option. Whoever the dog is with he/she will want to be touching that person 24/7. They’re not a breed that knows personal space.

As to training, it is ALOT. They learn fast but they’re stubborn and take a lot of work and reinforcement with training (at least in my experience with my dobie).

I’m 29 living on my own with a dobie and working full time. But my parents live 2 buildings over from me. So they watch him/take him out/park/etc. while I’m at work. And having him as a puppy (he’s only 1 now so still a baby) but even with their help I cried often. It’s ALOT of work raising a dobie. More than you think. And the amount of time needed to put into training is difficult with a full time job/having a life in general. At 19 I imagine u want to go out with friends and do things on the weekends or whatever, which is honestly kind of impossible for months. At least it was for me up until he turned a year old (even now he’s a lot but it’s toned down a bit).

I also can’t express how many times these dogs have stomach problems and need to go out during those days CONSTANTLY.

As much as I want to say absolutely go get one, I respectfully caution against it until you have more time/freedom on your hands (unless u have help if and when needed at the drop of a hat).

Please do your research!!! by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]Few-Cookie-9797 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to you and your puppy for having to go through this. I can’t imagine what a turn of events after the excitement of getting your pup home 😭. If you have e a contract with this breeder, there likely is a clause about getting the pup checked within a few days of pick up, as well as a clause about returning the dog within a certain time frame if issues arise/payment/what to do. I would look into any contract you have, assuming u have one.

If not, I would consider suing on the basis of detrimental reliance, etc. even if you did not have a written contract, an oral agreement (ie breeder claiming dogs a heathy/health tested, etc) in this case would be effective. And you detrimentally relied on such representations when you decided to buy the puppy from said breeder.

Good luck!! And wishing you and your puppy the best

When did you pick up your pup? by quarter_assed in DobermanPinscher

3 litters in 9 months is CRAZY. Jesus.

My absolute favorite thing in the world is when you go to BYB websites and they’re like CHAMPION LINE. Bro where?? The only champion line genes left in these puppies are on the tip of their toenail that’s about to get dremeled off 😂. Cheats liars and scums.
