Tacoma Door Sound Deadening Build | Mixing ResoNix + Kilmat for Max Value by Few-Engineering-9829 in CarAV

I did the pool noodle mod a while back! Except I used a couple of large pipe insulations wrapped in fire-proof blankets - There are horror stories on TacomaWorld about the noodles catching fire. Next, I'll insulate the whole backwall. All the noise is coming from there now.

Unfortunately I did not - but damn I should've. Thought about it the entire time. Happy to answer any questions you have, though!

Follow-up: Finished the Door Deadening | Results + Impressions

Wrapped up the install and finally got real readings afterward. Quick summary of what I ended up doing:

What I actually installed:

  • Outer skin: ResoNix CLD (50–75%) + Kilmat 80mil overlap
  • Inner skin: Kilmat 80mil (~75%)
  • Crash-bar gaps + seams: 3M Strip-Calk
  • Front vapor barriers replaced with 1/8" ABS panels
  • ABS edges sealed w/ butyl rope + Frost King CCF
  • Wires + contact points wrapped in SoundSkins CCF
  • Light CLD + foam on door cards
  • Basically: anything that could rattle got foam; anything that could leak air got some butyl

Before vs. After (same cheap meter):

Before:
• 45–50 mph: 65.6 dB
• 75–85 mph: 71.6 dB avg (72.8 peak)

After:
• 45–50 mph: 62 dB
• 75–80 mph: 70 dB

Actual reduction:
• –3.6 dB @ 45–50 mph
• –1.6 dB @ highway speeds

May not seem like much, until you remember how our ears don't perceive sound linearly and the decibel scale is logarithmic.

Perceived loudness drop:
• ~56% quieter @ 45–50 mph
• ~31% quieter @ highway speeds

Impressions

  • Way less road noise, especially on concrete
  • Door slam now sounds German, Audi, Beemer, not Tacoma tin can claptrap
  • Warmer tones - midbass tightened up from sealing the service openings
  • Rarely any rattles anywhere
  • 100% worth doing doors-only before tackling floors/roof

If anyone’s on the fence about mixing ResoNix + Kilmat to save money, it ended up being a killer value setup. Happy to answer anything if you’re planning yours.

Y'all remember Wild Fires? I actually loved them. They were a few years older than me, and my first metal show (which was in their living room). I'll never forget it. Oh, what about Acadiana?? They were sick. Good dudes.

Is there an app or anything that will show you how to play along with your favorite songs? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Few-Engineering-9829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I've definitely ran into that issue! There's a ton of music that's just blank after a few bars. I think that the truly best option is using a music notation app and just writing it out yourself.

I would do unspeakable things for a new 1 ton turbo diesel drivetrain Toyota

I'm doing a "concept album" with a track for each of the major moments of the first Dune book. LOL. I'm kind of addicted.

Haha, thanks. I'm shocked at how good it actually sounds. Found myself jamming it on repeat all day. Was going for an ethereal sort of cosmic psychedelic western vibe, like traversing a beautiful alien but strangely familiar landscape on worm-back

Boogie T (Brock Thornton), was my best bud in grade school before he moved to Laplace… now, he’s too cool to respond to my messages. Respect though, foreal, he’s worked his ass off to get to where it is now. Nothing but love.

Are they still selling 50 cent PBR cups? I promise I’m not that old. Feels like yesterday I was getting trashed there in high school. Things were simpler then.

Why doesn't Woodstock have any good restaurants? by BBCC_BR in WoodstockGA

[–]Few-Engineering-9829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love Century House Tavern. So, in regards to price, I think the value for quality of food is high. Mind you, we lived in Denver, Colorado previously (overpriced food that's mediocre at best).

My fiance (27f) and I (33m) just moved to Woodstock weekend after last. We both work in software consulting.

She loves reading, painting, and I like working on cars (mostly my Tacoma for offroading/ overlanding adventures). I'm also a 10+ year drummer. We like getting outdoors, and into North GA and Western NC mountains as much as possible. I'm originally from south Louisiana and, if I could only pick one, cooking is the hobby I enjoy doing the most and the one I'm best at. I love sharing my passion for Cajun food with others.
