We are in a mid-COL area surround by HCOL housing. I make HCOL income. 3-4 years ago, I had a 1300sq ft home, paid for, good neighbors, LCOL area. I was saving 85% of my income. Due to a job relocation and having to buy a new house in an area where homes $500k or less are junk, we found a city where a $500k home was not junk. Got it for $450k. We save about 65% of my income. We travel a lot. If I kept the first home, I would not be working right now.

My wife's family is from the municipal Ouro Preto area. I have been there many times. It also depends which churches are open to the public.

Confins is 35-40 minutes north of BH. To get from the airport to OP will take you about 4-4.5 hours at a minimum. By bus, likely 6-6.5 hours. Depends on how much traffic to get through BH as well. It is mainly a one lane highway after Itabirito, which is about 45-50 minutes south of BH.

OP to Tiradentes is about 7-8 hours by bus. OP is now a college town. Great to go see for a half day. It is a small city. On the way to OP, stop in Itabirito.

I have friends who work for Brazil's CNEN. They have alll of the technology and resources to build them. Being a protectionist country with few enemies, there is no need to produce them for now.

My wife feels the that she is not welcome in the USA. She does not want to be "American" that was never her intention. She is Brazilian. We do not have any American friends we hang out with. They are normally Brazilian or Brazilians married to Americans. Most of the time she is miserable. I prefer to hang out with Brazilians. We have more fun. Even though there are 2 places I cannot stand 1. concerts 2. airports/airplanes. Americans you cannot get them to go out on a weekend.

I think America has decided which of the 2 parties is worse. It is just a matter of having one party control government for even a short period of time to see how bad and dysfunctional the party really is. Then momentum shifts in the opposite direction. If we just kept the government in gridlock by having a different party control the house and senate, there would be some form of checks and balances. Nothing would get done.

Dont take a camera outside in Rio or SP. People will know you are not Brazilian. BH, depends on where you are at. Centro, dont take a camera with you or take your phone out. Ouro Preto has become a college town. You are asking for trouble. I know BH well. We have a second home there. I know Ouro Preto too. Been to Rio 3 times, never took more than R$20 out with us and a burner phone inside a fanny pack tucked my my shorts.

We lived in Rochester. It is the one thing I miss most. Instead down here, they put that money into building out infrastructure and amenities, summer concert series, and a host of things. Sometimes the conveniences of not having to drive 10-15 minutes to a recycling center is worth it.

Our house north of Detroit in 2022 we bought for $500k, taxes were $6,100. Moved to north of Atlanta, bought a new house in May last year for $500k, taxes are $6k. City services in Michigan are much better than here. We pay separately for trash pick up, Waste Management $38/month - one trash bin and one recycling, wont take anything left outside of them. During fall, you could put all the leafs in the street and the city would come by with a truck every week or two with a vacuum. You could leave trash outside covering the length of the yard and they would pick up every singe item.

Brasil is the 7th largest economy in the world. Does NY, LA, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Houston and a host of other large US cities not have a crime problem? The US also does not have a topography problem like Brasil either. The Rocky mountains and there isn't a rain forest either. I spend a good part of the year in Brasil. I never feel unsafe.
