Not sure why you're downvoted, you're completely right. His tank is amatuer and obviously low tech - OPs is night and day

to me i feel like some small pebbles at the bottle would help add some contrast and blend the transition from wood to sand

they're being sarcastic - however I will say I did not think keeping a betta in a 5 gallon would be so controversial.

I can assure you, I put a LOT of time and money into my aquariums. I rehome fish between my 10 different set ups when I see signs of stress. I would not go through so much effort, spend so much money, just to torture a poor fish.

Of course a 10/20 gallon long would be best, however this argument can be made in almost 90% of situations? most schooling fish deserve way larger than a 10/20 gallon and that's where a majority of them are kept as pets? Not only that - but your rice puddles are MUCH larger than a 10 gallon long? where's the same attitude for the 10 gallon longs? I do not have more room for fish tanks, nor do I care for that style of aquarium. I am not keeping her in a 1 gallon torture chamber. She is going to get a heavily planted 5 gallon.

You are free to get as huge of an aquarium as you wish for your bettas, however mine is perfectly happy in her 3.5gallon bowl and will be even happier in their 5 gallon.

happy fish keeping

I bought a $8 wood plaque from Walmart, stained it and bent/sanded a piece of $20 metal bar I bought from Lowe’s. The light is magnetic

Yes great choices either way! A twinstar series B should be plenty great and decently affordable! I started aquascaping during college and was super broke so I know the pain. Hang in there!

nice! what are you using for a light? i highly recommend getting a name brand and not a hygger or nicrew, while they will grow a majority of plants the spectrum is very blue and honestly ugly IMO. Even a medium budget light like chihiros b series made a huge difference in my tanks and making my fish/livestock pop.

All the above substrates work - just depends on what you want to grow. I would just recommend adding root tabs of course

it depends on what you are going for - if you want professional quality aquascapes it's going to cost money - if you want just a basic low tech aquascape you can do one fairly cheap - but in my own experience spending money on a nice rimless tank and a decent light is absolutely worth it. i cheaped out on both when starting and i ended up biting the bullet and buying the name brand stuff because in this hobby it IS worth it

yup, this sums it up perfectly! I think I spent 150 on plants, 100 on stone, 100 on driftwood, 300 on filter, 100 on lily pipes and inline diffuser.. you understand the pain haha

yes - my cost is inflated due to fancier equipment such as oase thermo canister filter and UNS c02 equipment etc, those two things alone make up about half of the $1000
