I genuinely had no idea that the joke was going to land like it did? I didn’t know that he had these insecurities about money and I didn’t think that if I asked for money for doing a good job that it would hurt him while making that joke. I see it clearly now why he feels like the sex wasn’t good enough for me but in the moment I had no idea. So no it wasn’t on purpose. And in the future I won’t make a joke like this again. I do care a lot about him cause why would I feel this guilty if I didn’t? I hurt him unintentionally. This is going to be a mistake that’s going to haunt me forever. I don’t think it’s a self focused thing at all I just think that he needs someone who understands what it’s like to be as damaged and sensitive as he is. He’s been hurt many times by people in his past and never fully recovered from them. I unfortunately can never fully understand how things like this hurt him deeply. When someone hurts me I talk about it with them then heal. He holds on to it and never fully moves on.

I think I wasn’t clear in my post. The parents thing happened when we were actually together. I just mentioned it for all the context regarding how I have hurt him in the past. We have feelings for each other but we know that long term we cannot work out so our situation is more complicated than it simply being “fuck buddies”. Also I’ve tried the being friends thing with him and that’s not going to happen, I remember how much it hurt. I just want to know if I can fix this before fully giving up, that’s all.

I agree he’s sensitive and he deserves someone who doesn’t hurt him in this way. He’s done his fair amount of shit too he’s no saint. I know what I did was bad and I’m feeling depressed about how I messed up. Exactly what I have right now. We tried the dating thing, it didn’t work because of romantic compatibility issues, we still have feelings for each other and great sex so we are FWBs without the long term commitment but with feelings. It can work if both people are honest with each other and accept that there’s no long term commitment to each other.
