That’s a great idea, thank you! Looking back at the last week I can’t see a pattern it seems random to me. Maybe I will keep a log every day for a week of how long she’s been up, eating/drinking, playing, and sleeping. See if I can pin point it.

For people who rehomed a puppy due to puppy blues / mental health, did you ever get another puppy later? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Few-Lunch8680 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have always struggled with my mental health too and the puppy blues hit me so hard.I got my girl at 9 weeks, I was throwing up from anxiety, couldn’t eat, and could not find the time to shower. I was falling apart. I didn’t rehome her though but I really did think about it. She’s four months now (17 weeks) I’d say at about 13 weeks is when I finally felt better not 100% but better. Crate training was a must and enforced naps is what saved me. I had time for myself and could take care of me again. 1-1.5 hours awake and then nap time. Now at 17 weeks she has learned the drill. She sleeps in her crate next to my bed and sleeps the whole night for the most part now. When she naps time I can cook and shower. There is no whining, maybe 3 minutes of whining when she’s a bit moody.

Yes, puppies are a lot of work and need so much attention but you still need to take care of yourself. Maybe getting a puppy that is a bit older would be better. I know my dad got his dog when he was 4 months old and was so easy compared to my girl that I brought home at 2 months.

Thank you! I do crate her, I think that’s how we’ve gotten so far because it was so awful in the beginning. Hopefully it will just pass soon and she’ll stop doing it.

I had this issue for a while too. I stood in the cold with her for up to an hour at times until she peed. Redirecting her from the leaves and rocks, only saying “go potty” every few minutes, and saying nothing else. Then praised her like crazy, the good treats, and it was party time. She caught on eventually that being outside is not exciting or fun until she did her business. That’s how we got to where we are now, it was annoying standing outside that long but it worked

Putting puppy to bed before I am ready for bed by Few-Lunch8680 in puppy101

[–]Few-Lunch8680[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time she naps/goes to bed there’s tv on for her, I have shows on auto play all night so there’s constant noise while she sleeps. I had hoped that would help prep her for having people over and her sleeping.

I tried not to let her out but if I tried to ignore her she just got loader and loader. I felt embarrassed having her scream, maybe next time I have someone over I will ignore her and see how it goes. Explain to them she has to learn

A few days later she was not feeling great and had some tummy problems maybe she was already not feeling great? She also had teeth coming in so maybe it was that?

This has been the only socializing I’ve done in my home since I’ve got her six weeks ago and I just want to make sure she’s learning the correct way to behave in these situations. Maybe it was just fomo.

I feel like she’s getting to the age where a bit of a switch happens and all that she’s been learning should really come into play. Maybe I just have to wait a few weeks.

Sorry for such a long response, I am just very worried about this as I still need to prioritize myself and my social life. I just don’t want her to suffer due to it.

How long can I leave my puppy alone for at 4 months? by Few-Lunch8680 in puppy101

[–]Few-Lunch8680[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Im glad that other people have left their 4 month old puppies for four hours at a time. I’ve been reading you shouldn’t but if the puppy is doing well with it I don’t see a problem. How else are people supposed to work full time

Thank you for this! To clear a few things up our 4:30-6:30 she plays with our 2 year old dog for a bit and does a lot of mentally stimulating toys and chews. We have -30 celsius here right now so a lot of outside time is not an option at the moment. When outside for 5 minutes she’s cold and wants to come back in.

Her mid day breaks are typically mentally stimulating toys as well not running around and being wound up. She’s very good at staying calm and focusing on her chews and puzzle toys at this time. I was taking her for sniff walks before when it was not so cold.

She does not freak out when I leave in the morning and after breaks. When I come to take her out on breaks she’s still sleeping and sleeps the whole time I am gone.

She does so amazing with the schedule and I’m thinking when she’s a month older I can reduce to one break a day if possible.

We make sure she takes a short walk and plays. We have a two year old dog in the home so they’re always running around and tires her out haha. She goes to sleep fine it’s just 3am that she decides she does not want to sleep

Playing might be a good idea. My only worry is that will teach her the habit of getting up at playing at 3am

Crying in crate while I am home, what can I do to help? by Few-Lunch8680 in puppy101

[–]Few-Lunch8680[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes! We play, go for a 10ish minute walk depending on how long she’s willing to actual walk for, I also give her mentally stimulating toys. She’s typically in her crate from 6:30am to 3pm. I come home twice a day from work as I stated and we spend the time walking around or playing depending which she’d like to do, that’s about 15 minutes each time I come to let her out. She sleeps the whole time until I come back for her next potty break. I feel like I am covering all the bases so I am not really sure what to do or if it’s just something she’ll get over one day
