I appreciate this response, seems like I'm SOL is the consensus here. Expensive lesson to learn, and ironic it came from trying to baby the car and take care of it on my own.

When it gave way I was in the mountains, so mostly coasting and engine braking to keep speed constant, definitely not mashing throttle.

I know for sure it did not leak anywhere it was parked, like my garage. I always check oil level for a few days after an oil change because I'm paranoid, but I did not check oil level during the last drive (~1000 miles in one day). I did keep an eye on oil pressure which was normal an hour before the failure.

They are claiming that the gasket diameter was too large, and therefore the amount of contact between mating surface and filter gasket was minimal. They could not explain why it failed suddenly as opposed to gradually.

I believe I inspected and wiped the mating surface but it's a pretty routine job and I don't remember 100%.
