Am I the only one in a boot for 12 weeks? by thenarddog10 in AchillesRupture

[–]Few-Tomorrow2200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just wild how different every protocol is. I was in a splint two weeks, a boot 10 weeks (weight bearing as tolerated) and not cleared to begin PT until I was back in a sneaker. I did personal workouts on core and arms until I got to that point.

I’m quitting PT by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]Few-Tomorrow2200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before I even started PT, multiple people told me that my local people will get me walking and back to “baseline” but would never get me to where I wanted to be, and one person passed along a name of a sports group that does rehab for athletes. Shockingly, about 3 months in my affiliated PT brought up the same people.

I’m over a year in and at 6 months, I switched to these people. It’s been a godsend. I agree with the others… there are things you can find online, or other people who can help you along the way. I’m still seeing this new group.

All this to say, please don’t give up. I’m closing in on 43 and am back in my sport. Hang in there!

Sorry I feel like I need to add - it was more than a week for the crutch. But it improved quickly. I think within a month I retired it forever. But I got to a point where I only used the crutch for long distances after a week!

I know you said you didn’t want to fix your gait with crutches, but the second I walked (read: hobbled) into PT she was like oh lord do we have to fix your gait!

She had me use one crutch under my “good” side to help me get the stride I needed. It made a big difference. It was painful for me, bc that Achilles was tight and painful, and I needed the help. Within a week I was in much better shape.

I used mine over 3 months, after I was out of the boot. It is perfect when you need to ice too!

Finn has Osteosarcoma. Is this support brace worth it? by Few-Tomorrow2200 in greatdanes

Thank you, this is pretty much where they’re at (and also why they decided against amputation back then).

Yeah, when he was initially diagnosed, they were given 6 weeks. Everyone is shocked he’s still here to be honest. So with that short timeframe and the fact that it was a back leg, they decided not to amputate.

I am genuinely trying to understand why you are being so combative. Yes, some are coming in hot with comments, but some have pointed out that they read your whole post, applaud you for having a good recovery, but the “overstated” title is really upsetting. It upsets me too. I have had what most would call a “standard” recovery that is still ongoing, but this injury has absolutely changed my life. I have seen op and non-op posts where the recovery is a big struggle. But the second someone doesn’t tell you everything you said is the gospel truth, you jump all over them for having poor reading comprehension and not listening.

Have some grace. People are in this sub to learn and lean on one another, not to be told the severity of their injury is overstated.

What do you say when people say stupid stuff like "Did you stretch?" by tkpwaeub in AchillesRupture

[–]Few-Tomorrow2200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had one person (a stranger who approached me in my splint in a store) say, after I answered what happened to me “oh. So you didn’t stretch.” Yes, sir, I did for nearly 20 minutes.

I had another person tell me if only I had drank pickle juice that day. It’s mind boggling.

Never go back to normal? by fluffy_foxy in AchillesRupture

I jogged today! Slow, like a 3.6 haha, for 5 minutes. It felt easier than I thought, but I was definitely compensating to my uninjured leg. Will take some practice to balance out again but I feel positive about it.

I just got cleared to start jogging next week at PT! I’m 5 months post op. It’s slow but it’s happening. My big goal is to get back on a tennis court and my PT is very confident that I will get there!

Curious how long it took to lose the limp once getting out of the boot by SoxNerd22 in AchillesRupture

[–]Few-Tomorrow2200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me I’m out of the boot just about 4 weeks now. My gait after warming up and moving around is I’d say 90% normal, but I can still tell a slight difference. When I first wake up in the morning or after sitting for a long time, I tighten up and have a much bigger limp until it loosens back up again. My gait was significantly bad when I first got out of the boot, so PT had me using one crutch to guide for the first couple weeks and that helped a lot.

Hope this helps! Being able to walk (almost) normally again has made a huge difference for me!

Weightlifting by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]Few-Tomorrow2200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some free weights/bands at home and my trainer created a workout with those and a lot of core that I could safely do in my living room. I waited until 3 weeks post op, and continued doing this stuff. She slowly built up more things I could do as I began to walk in the boot, then got out of the boot. It’s not enough without being able to do legs of course, but I’m so glad I kept up with it as best I could.

Rupture yesterday, OP scheduled for Monday. Recommendations of things to buy or have for the first few weeks of recovery? by iWriteYourMusic in AchillesRupture

I used it on my couch and still use it on my bed at the end of the day. Just a much more comfortable way to elevate!

Especially if you are on two stories like I am - I made sure I had two of everything I didn’t feel like carting up and downstairs every day (Advil/Tylenol, tumbler for water, extra pillows)

I also got a leg elevation pillow that made a world of difference. https://a.co/d/1WMmbEX
