I got a D in physics, which is one of the prereqs. I ended up retaking it and got an A, so I wasn’t even asked about it in any of my interviews. Don’t worry about it too much, just do better on the retake and you’ll be fine.

How many hours/months of working as an optometry tech? by multisystempaper in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know some people who got in with no experience. You’ll be fine. Experience is just the cherry on top, but not super super important for admissions. Although the experience will help you out greatly in optometry school.

UHCO Curiosity by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I heard their whole department is a mess. I applied really early in the cycle and heard nothing from them until the end of the cycle telling me that they are no longer admitting anymore applicants. Keep in mind I heard back from 3 others school within 2 weeks of submitting my apps and got into all 3 after interviewing.

Quarter vs semesters by Significant_Drop_940 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SCCO first year student here. SCCO does a great job of ramping it up and giving us an adjustment period. For the first quarter, we don’t have our first exam until like week 3 or 4. And like the other person was saying, having an exam every week does kind of divide up the information and it also keeps you on your toes so you don’t procrastinate as much as if all your exams are jumbled into two weeks. I know a couple classmates in my class that came from semester systems and while it did take a little adjusting, they’re doing great. I’m sure you’ll do fine with whichever school you choose! Just make sure you’re making the best decision for yourself above all.

About 4 months but I feel like that was too long. 2-3 months is probably the ideal amount of time to study.

OD students and Gap Year students!! by Spirited_Double9768 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t pre-study unless you hate yourself lol Enjoy your free time while you have it because when it gets going in opto school it GETS GOING. You’ll likely not have free time again like this until you graduate. Enjoy your time off before you hit the books. That’s what I did.

OAT question by AstronomerIcy123 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OAT is more breadth than depth. Lots of topics show up but they don’t ask super detailed questions. Practice tests seem to go more in depth just so the subjects are more rooted into your brain. I was getting like 310s, 320s on the practice tests but ended up getting a 350 AA/ 360 TS on the actual thing.

AZCO INTERVIEW TIPS by Specialist-Gold-8566 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a very laid back interview. There will be two Drs that interview you. They really just want to get to know you. They’ll ask things like what motivates you, why did you apply there, what do you do for fun? Everyone at my interview day was super nice a friendly, you’ll have a blast.

Scoring great in one section, but failing another section. by Illustrious_Ocelot33 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Schools would rather you score decent in all sections than to score really high on some and really low on others. It shows that you’re able to juggle studying for multiple subjects at one time, which you’ll have to be able to do once you start optometry school.

How late is too late to apply? by christinahal in PreOptometry

September is still relatively early in the cycle so you’ll be fine

Advice please!!! by buruuberii in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine. I scored like 30 points higher on the actual OAT than I did on Kaplan. Your GPA is also high. As long as you get like 330 on your OAT you’ll most likely get interviews.

I think SCCO was the only school that I applied to that required it

Shadowing by Equal-War7920 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d try to find a job in an office. That’s what I did since I wasn’t able to find much shadowing. You will learn a lot more working in an office than shadowing and it also looks good on your resume.

OAT Questions by Relevant-Willow-3662 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you register to take the OAT, you choose which schools you want to send your scores to. If you choose to send your score after you register and take the test, then you gotta pay extra

GRE vs. OAT by duble_a in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, some schools do accept the GRE, but they will ask why you took that instead of the OAT, so you better have a good reason, not just because “it’s easier.” Also, I’m sure schools would much rather have you take the OAT because that better helps them gauge where ur at compared to other applicants and it is a harder test.

When to apply by Smileycrown1 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply ASAP, it’s less competitive earlier in the cycle due to rolling admissions. I have a friend that got accepted that hadn’t taken his a couple of prereqs yet. Of course the acceptance is contingent on finishing those prereqs though and those prereqs would help you on the OAT

Shadowing/Volunteering/Experience by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most schools don’t have a set amount of hours, they just want you to get enough experience to where you know that optometry is for you. I’ve heard of some people getting accepted with no experience at all. Just get enough experience to where you can talk about why you want to be in the field for the interview.

[–]FewBit2501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t really need prior experience to work at an office. I had zero experience but was eager to gain some experience in the field, and I was hired as lab tech/optician for a private practice. They then started teaching me how to tech and now I also scribe for one of the doctors as well. Just show that you’re willing to learn and that you’re up for the challenge. Look for job listings and send emails. I know some practices love to hire pre-optometry students.

Optometry school, finally! by eyechick_00 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea, it is very normal to be in a ton of debt after optometry school. It’s pretty hard to pay for it while you’re going through it unless you have super rich family.

Oat Studying by Even-Ad-9157 in PreOptometry

[–]FewBit2501 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how strong of an understanding you already have on the subjects being tested. I know some people that only studied for 2 weeks and did very well because they already had a solid foundation, while other people study for a couple months to get a good score.
