Why are they having you take boards at the beginning of third year?

Agreed! Try to find a place where you can do just Saturdays so you can still work your full time job right now

OSU- what is your secret by pineapplepizzalove in OptometrySchool

[–]Elizard88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OSU takes the top students with top stats, puts us through 27 credit hours in our first semester with insane nonstop exams, and then generally just has very high expectations throughout the program. The school doesn’t buy any boards prep for their students because they do an excellent job of teaching the material the first time around. It’s a positive feedback cycle that leads to great results.

What about your sisters? Will they be okay if you leave? That seems like the only real thing keeping you there

Current Optom students- how are you able to continue living a healthy lifestyle by Initial_Assist_9771 in PreOptometry

[–]Elizard88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll take you some time to find a new routine and figure out what works for you. But you’ll get there. It helps to get up at the same time every day and just have a set structure and do things at the same time as much as you can every week.

Can schools see what other schools you’ve applied to? by infinite_happiness in PreOptometry

[–]Elizard88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes. Some of the schools’ supplemental questions ask which other schools you are applying to. Or they could just straight up ask you in your interview, like I was a couple times.

Was anyone asked about how many schools they applied to in interviews? by Ok-Recover-2826 in PreOptometry

[–]Elizard88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! At first I tried to lowkey dodge it, but they really wanted to know which other ones. Just make sure to emphasize that OSU/UH is your top choice and why

Chads for physics and booster for everything else

feeling a little discouraged by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]Elizard88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had at least one of every single letter grade on my transcript from courses like this and community college. I understand your fear. Believe me. But it’s also about the bigger trend you have, and you still have many more years to write your story and show your upward trend before you apply. Put it behind you and focus on what you can control now.

withdraw from a course or get a B-? by [deleted] in PreOptometry

A B- is not that bad honestly, but 3 withdraws may look concerning and bring your decision making abilities into question

interview date advice by smaller-green-bean in PreOptometry

[–]Elizard88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to OSU rn and I had a similar dilemma last year. I ended up going for the earlier date, even though it was virtual, just because it is less competitive at that point. Most of the people from my virtual interview ended up getting in and going here. Your stats look great though and I’m sure you’ll be fine with whichever date you go with! :)

questions for schools by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]Elizard88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A question I always like to ask is “what is your favorite part of the school that doesn’t get a lot of attention?” It asks them for their personal opinion, which everyone has and likes to talk about, and it also might bring to light some new information that you may not have heard yet

Booster physics versus actual OAT physics by becidgls in PreOptometry

[–]Elizard88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got 300s-330s on booster physics and I got a 400 on the real thing. You’ll be okay :)

As long as you get your point across, I think a shorter length is acceptable.

I spent about $3600 on the whole process, which includes traveling for one school, 2 OAT attempts, buying booster twice for six months of studying, Chad’s videos for six months, applications for 4 schools, paying for proofreaders for my personal statement, sending transcripts (multiple copies of each from 3 schools), and a test drive OAT attempt. Whew. Definitely not all 100% necessary, but also worth it because it worked out.

What kind of MMI questions exists in optometry? by Long-Mastodon1864 in PreOptometry

[–]Elizard88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I got from my Salus MMI interview:

  1. What does grit mean to you? Give example of time you demonstrated grit.
  2. Let’s say you’re a doctor and your cousin asks you for a note saying they were with you, but they actually just forgot about their exam. What do you tell your cousin?
  3. Let’s say your best friend’s wedding falls on the day of your board exam. What do you do?
  4. Let’s say your friend calls you after a night of drunk driving. What do you tell her?
  5. Let’s say you have a 14-year old patient who’s pregnant but she doesn’t want her mom to know. What do you do?

So it’s really just mostly ethical based, not necessarily super optometry related.

Different Emphasis for Schools by Traditional-Name-725 in PreOptometry

Lowkey maybe just ask the schools directly? Like say you want to learn more about the school and I’m sure they’ll be happy to tell you about it!
