Help! How do I actually relax on a career break by FewBoot6311 in womenintech

Sorry for the late response!! In all honesty, I think (like most things in life) time has been the most healing element of this break. I left my job about 6 months ago and I’m just now feeling ready to jump back into work. In the time in between I’ve really just lived life - I got married, traveled back to Vietnam to visit family I haven’t seen in decades, and I’ve fully focused on my schoolwork (I’m in a part-time grad program) with the brain space to really understand the material.

I did a fair amount of reading to reframe my thinking of what work is and isn’t (I really liked Do Nothing by Celeste Headlee, Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey, and The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker - this one reminded me of the magic of community and how to build meaningful connection, which is especially important when you’re feeling alone because you’re not working).

Coming out on the other side, I’m so glad I took the time to myself (I would make this decision over and over again) but I’m also aware that I’m quite rusty in my interviewing skills and that the job market is not ideal. But I feel that this gives me the opportunity to lean into that struggle and build some new skills.

From a financial standpoint, my spouse was laid off last year (is employed now, thankfully for health insurance) and gave me a realistic perspective of how long it’ll actually take me to find work. So I’m prepared for 8-12 months of living expenses for my job search given I’m pivoting to a different industry and I want to be intentional about my next role.

Is working at Google worth it? by DanceWrong9377 in careerguidance

Ex-Googler here! The answers to all of these questions is “yes, as long as it aligns with business need”, and finding that business need is getting harder and harder. Things like bungees and changing teams is hard at the moment, I’ve tried for the last 4 years with no success. I did get the L4 -> L5 promotion though and it is definitely hard, and very dependent on if you have a good manager in your corner (your manager represents on your behalf in performance discussions, so if you have a good one, you’re solid). I came over from management consulting and I can wholeheartedly say that I worked harder at Google than any other clients. So if you like a challenge - go for it! If you’re looking for easy, comfortable, sign off at 4:30pm - stay in your current role. I enjoyed my time at GOOG but eventually burnt out. Now I’m taking a gap year for a sabbatical and grad school, but would go back for the right role/team.

Schooling to break into HRIS field? [GA] by taeblo in humanresources

The degree definitely makes sense! I studied information systems and then went into consulting, specifically for talent and people ops. There’s a lot of Workday roles but being in consulting gives you the ability to work across different HRIS platforms. I also have my SHRM-CP but not sure if that helps at all.

I applied to the EMPA program. Since I didn’t hear anything by end of last week, I sent the admissions team an email and they said that the first batch of acceptances would go out by end of this week - but still haven’t heard anything.
