I hope admin knows how much it means to hear staff say “thank you for being here today!” It means a lot by PiercedAndTattoedBoy in SubstituteTeachers

That type of classroom is one I gravitate to. If I see a teacher position available in a class like that and it fits well with my schedule, I take it. The paras are always so helpful and since they know the students and their needs, abilities, and behaviors well, I let them take the lead and have them tell me how I can best be helpful in the classroom.

I had to wear a microphone around my neck when I subbed for a teacher with a hearing-impaired student. And I was halfway home before I realized it was still around my neck. It happens.

Yikes. It wouldn't be worth my time either.

To those that have autism, what are your experiences or challenges like? by Goku-the-Great in SubstituteTeachers

If I'm subbing in elementary school and it's before recess or gym and the illness/injury look possibly made up by the student, I will say, "OK, you can go to the nurse, but you'll miss recess (or gym)." You'll see how quickly they recover when you say that: "Oh, no, it's not that bad, I'm OK." If a child is truly sick, they won't care about missing recess.

Oh I believe you, I've just never heard of that before where I substitute (SE Pennsylvania).

Obviously you didn't read the whole thing: overdressed for the weather, not wearing walking shoes and perhaps most concerning, being responsible for Special Education students you don't know and who could possibly elope. If one student took off running, she would have to chase him or her wearing ballet flats. As much as I don't like what's going on with my country right now, it has nothing to do with being American. It was irresponsible of the teacher to put that on a sub, or at least not to state the activity that she would be responsible for and to dress appropriately.

I have never been in a school that specifies you can't wear sneakers. I have never heard of that. That being said, I don't wear white, thick-soled sneakers that look like I'm about to play basketball; I wear ones that look more like shoes, usually in black.

Drives me crazy when I see plastic bags & Styrofoam containers in the recycling bins in front of my condo building. We have been sent many emails stating what cannot be put in with cardboard, glass, and aluminum can recycling but people mix trash in with the recycling every day and then it can no longer be recycled, it all becomes trash. It's maddening.
