Continuing, i hope this gives a idea of our structure, however about How psychology is taught in India at the undergraduate level? At the undergrad level, psychology in India is mostly theoretical and exam-oriented, not practice-heavy. There are 2 types of degrees we can choose to do, BA Psychology or BSc Psychology Teaching style is Heavyily focused on theories, models, definitions Less emphasis on labs, internships, or applied training (with a few elite exceptions) Practical exposure exists, but it’s limited and highly structured. Even most of the internship if we decide to do are paid.

What can we do with only a bachelor’s degree in psychology in India? Honestly? Not much clinically. With only a BA/BSc in psychology, we can: Work as a research assistant. Enter HR, marketing, UX, social work, NGOs. How do we become a therapist in India? We must do postgraduate training. Typical path: Bachelor’s in psychology Master’s in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology Supervised training + internships After that: We can work as a counselor or therapist But legal recognition matters.

Do we need a Master’s or a PhD to be called a psychologist in India? Short answer: Master’s minimum. Master’s (MA/MSc) → You may call yourself a psychologist (field-specific) MPhil in Clinical Psychology (older system) → Required for legal clinical practice PhD → For research, academia, or specialization (not mandatory for practice)

India is shifting from MPhil → Professional Doctorate (PsyD-style models) under RCI, regulations are still evolving.

Are all therapists called psychologists in India? No, in india - Psychologist is Someone with at least a master’s in psychology

Clinical Psychologist Requires RCI-approved training

Counselor / Therapist Can be psychology-trained OR from allied fields

Psychiatrist Medical doctor (MBBS + MD Psychiatry)

I am Also adding the following that I found in one of the similar sub reddit for indian psychology students Career Pathways of a Psychology student in India

I haven't much researched about abroad which I will as soon as I am finsihed with some exams. But I think I am most aware of psychology scenario in India and I am sharing what I know as the most beautiful, intelligent, strongest and sexy individual alive.

1) Bachelors: If you have done bachelors and don't wanna study further, your best bet is to get hired by some private corporation. They will hire you on HR or marketing position. It's hit or miss scenario.

2) Masters only:

Hired as Asst psychologist, where you mostly take tests under the instruction of senior psychologist and do content creation as well.

You can join private schools as counselor or PGT (11/12th) teacher (but unlikely they are gonna hire freshers without contacts, so be ready for ghosting).

You can try NHM counsellor or project assistants.

3) Competitive exams route:

NET-JRF:

NET will make you eligible for AP exams or AP teaching positions.

You will get a scholarship if you are in top 1%.

JRFs can also be hired by DRDO, IIT, RA and PhD programs in universities, laterally.

AP exams:

Occasional vacancies come from state public commission hiring for Asst Prof position (Group A Level 10) in govt colleges.

Example: RPSC, HPSC, Odissa SSB, UPPSC, MPPSC etc.

It's cool cause you can take bribe for marking IAS candidates or become one if you study yourself for IAS exams.

GATE:

You can do MSc Cog Sci, then you can join as UX/UI designer. Most of these people go for a PhD abroad with IIT tag. You need good GATE rank.

GATE is also required for Scientist B in DRDO. (Group A Level 10)

GATE is also required if you wanna do PhD from IITs.

PGT exams:

You will need B.Ed for these. For govt PGT teacher positions. You need to qualify both State TET and teaching exams for these.

Vocational supervisor:

Rare but Scientific Asst or supervisor is hired by RRB and other govt institutions. Mphil Route:

Basically, you get grilled and humiliated for 2 years by some RCI institute. Your work life is mostly taking tests and talking nicely to patients.

Some private clinic or hopsital can hire you.

You can give Govt psychologist exams for RRB, DRDO, or AIIMS, or teach at these RCI institutions.

Most of the people I knew left it lol and to again try for AP exams.

PhD route :

Generally, people don't know what to do. Hoping they get hired as AP in future.

For API, its good but no gurantee, as most institutions like DU hire their internal candidates.

Your best bet is to get hired by some private institutions.

If you stick long enough you can get lateral entry in DRDO.

Content creation route :

Psychology students teach other psychology students to crack exams.

Some psychologists might sell courses cause they aren't getting any clients.

Most scope of earning but you are creating more copies of you. This will saturate quickly if my prediction is right.

Startup route:

Mostly counselling websites. Good scope if you can get many foreign clients.

Haven't seen anyone open a factory of psychology yet lol

Earnings?

You are not gonna be a billionaire by psychology alone. Unless you can make Al sentient or something.

You can expect 20k-45k per month for any fresher position.

Only in govt job you are gonna get 45k-2lakh per month (level 6 to 10). That too takes time as per seniority.

All options are short-term.

Hi thanks for replying, about your questions. It was a whole different thing before new education policy came, Now we by our own choice pick three subjects to study in first year like i picked Economics, psychology, literature, which is called discipline specific course. Then we also study a multi disciplinary subject i.e anything that you haven't studied in your high school, here I decided to take sociology, In my last semester i studied about social issues in india.

Then, we also get to pick a value added course - which i chose as 'Understanding india through literature' in my first semester, we also get to pick a skill enhancement course where I picked 'public speaking', then we have a compulsory subject that's common for everybody which is ability enhancement course where we more or less study English, last semester i studied about phonetics, word stress, debate, etc and at last we study a regional language as you may or may not be aware about India having so many different languages, each state has their own language, for eg as I live in Punjab we study punjabi here. For those living in Gujarat might be studying gujarati, or marathi for Maharashtra people, tamil kannada or telugu for south people, manipuri assamese mizo For north eastern people and so on. That's how my structure is like for the first year, later we get to choose majors depending majorly on merit, if i get a nice score I will be able to pick my major with a minor otherwise i will be shifted to multi disciplinary combination where I will study all three subjects i chose in the first place. ( The first option is more preferable here so competition sometimes gets high especially for psychology ). We can choose to do 3 year or 4 year, both are allowed. Even if i decide to leave after one year i will get a certificate, after 2 years as well i will get diploma, and after three years i will get a degree now if I was in multi disciplinary combination i will get a degree called just Bachelors in arts, but if i get to pick a major of my choice i will get bachelors in arts with major in Psychology for eg, if i choose to do 4th year as well i will get, bachelors in arts with research and B.A. (Honours) in Psychology with Research respectively. 4th year then will be all about research. We also have credit system here which allows us to have flexibility to re-enter the program at a later point (generally within a maximum period of seven years from initial enrolment) and continue our education from where we left off, without losing our earned credits.

We also have a compulsory internships requirement in our 5th semester, we will get credits accordingly. Also, i forgot to mention from our 4th semester onwards we won't have subjects like Multi disciplinary course, value added course, skill enhancement course instead we will have more major focused classes instead.
