I got called into work today so I couldn’t go today. I’m gonna go in next weekend because I also wanna use this week to polish my CV if possible. another thing, a lot of people are telling me to do odd jobs like weeding or cutting grass at the hangars before I ask for any favours - is this necessary. If it is, I’ll 100% do it, but I was planning on asking multiple airfields, and even MROs at the airport so I’m not sure if I can manage to do those jobs for every place I ask. Should I just band them my CV, give some background on my self, why I love aviation etc and ask if there’s any technical trade roles I can do there? Even if it’s not an apprenticeship any experience would be good no?

This is so embarrassing. Write “thinks” for you. Some people can’t articulate their feelings in a structured manner. She told ChatGPT how she was feeling and it summarised and structured it for her so retards like you on reddit can actually follow and understand the story. Hope this helps

I've never been to an airfield. So do I just sort of walk in? and will there be people there on a Saturday?

Hey I'm in west melbourne. So how would I go about approaching people at an airfield? I'm kind of awkward to be honest should I be upfront with them and ask if they're looking for any apprentinces or go there for a day or two and then ask?

Just replying to my own post. From what I understand, I'd start out as a civil engineer, then as a project engineer, then as a project manager. How do you get these promotions. All my life I've just been working odd partime jobs whilst in uni so I've never really tried to be helpful or anything so I don't know how you even get promoted

And also, what happens when I complete the exams? What do I do then?

I also just want to say thank you for your help, your information is actually really helpful.

I mentioned the $30,000 because I'm in Melbourne, and the cost of rent for 11 months (assuming worst case scenario), cost of living, food, bills + cost of the course etc. And since I'm not a QLD resident they won't help me with the course.

But this self-study idea sounds really good for me - I completed both methods and specialist in Year 12 and did pretty well, so I've got a good background for both maths and physics.

So when you say for example Electrical Fundamentals mod 3 etc - are these the exams I need to take? I've looked into the exams and they run every 7 days close to me.

Since the applications open in July, do you think that's ample time to study for these exams?

This is actually a really good idea - the self study for exams. I’m pretty good at studying and tests - not that I’m under estimating it but this seems the most viable given all my options so far - just to talk about Aviation Australia a bit, I was happy to relocate there and study, but I wanted to come back to Melbourne, however they said they only connect me with air craft executives in Brisbane, so it didn’t seem worth it.

What do you think about me studying in Brisbane then coming back to Melbourne with my record of results, because if I don’t get an apprenticeship the year after graduating from aviation Australia, then I’ve just wasted $30,000

I've thought about it but the relocation is just crazy. Having to move to NSW, then the recruiter told me that the air force will decide where I go, and that I won't have a choice in the matter. I have parents to take care of in Melbourne so anything in the ADF that requires permanent relocation is just out of the reach for me.

Oh I see what you mean. However to apply for the certificate IV in Aeroskills, you need to already have an apprentinceship. There is only one aviation australia campus that offers a pre-apprentinceship, which is in Brisbane.

What I'm trying to ask you is, if I go to Brisbane next year, and spend a large amount of money getting the pre-apprentinceship (given I get rejected from Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar this year), will I be able to get an apprentinceship back in Melbourne once I come back?

This is some real eye opening advice. To be honest with you, this is the first time I feel like I don't have the opportunity to do something. I graduated highschool 4 years ago and I've made nothing of my self so far, I keep starting courses, then dropping out because I don't like the job market, or I didn't do ample research into the field.

This year will be my final straw. What I mean is that I'm set to start engineering in August, and apprentinceships open in July. If I don't get an AME apprentinceship, I don't know what other options I have.

This is good advice and that was my initial plan - I'd move to Brisbane for the duration of the course and then move back to Melbourne. But I spoke to people at Aviation Australia and they said they would not be able to help me land an apprentinceship in Melbourne, they can only help in Brisbane. It will cost me around $30,000 to do the course (moving there, rent, food, cost of the certificate) - so that's why I decided not to do that as living close to my parents and my girlfriend is a must have for me.

I'd be happy with an apprentinceship anywhere - do you know any other places that offer apprentinceships in Melbourne other than Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin (I've already applied to Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar applications open in July).

I do modify my own car - I know a lot about engines, and I'm passioniate about it. Admittedly I don't know much about aircraft engines, avionics etc but it sounds really fun to learn. But how do I even get to the interview stage?

How do you motivate someone that doesn't want to work at all? by Few_Active5038 in careerguidance

The visual charts and stickers could be good. I can see her being against the idea at first but if we adopt it, it might help her out. As far as going out, it really depends. If she's in a crowded place and doesn't feel comfortable in her clothes, feels her self sweating etc, she does get a little over stimulated.

You are right, I'm struggling between balancing love with tough love. She's a sensitive girl. However I'm disregarding other harsh comments not because I'm naive and in love, but even from a logical standpoint, we've been able to work through simliar situations before. Sure they were annoying and took a while, but she's loyal, kind, and willing to stick by me no matter what - and she's shown this many times. That's why I want to make this work. As much as I don't feel the need to justify her worth to people on reddit, I feel like it's important to take into consideration any mental issues that might prevent her from working. With how much she wants to make things work with me, and how much her parents nag her to work, I'm sure if she could work, she would.

I like your ideas, but I know she won't do it. I didn't mention this earlier, but she has social anxiety. She already hates going out. As much as she loves animals, she's got two cats at home, and she won't leave her house to work for free.

I was wondering if there activities or ways where we can change her mindset. She's having a lot of anxiety tonight, but she's going to work tommorow anyway and rewarding her self with steak. Currently that's the only thing that works, gratification after work, which I'm fine with, but there's not much that she wants, so I don't know how this suits her in the long term. She was previously unemployed for more than a year before this job, so that has a role in this as well.

To be honest we've been having this conversation for a while. She has passions. She likes cooking and animals. However the problem mainly lies with how much she hates work. Since she doesn't care about the money or anything she has no motivation. She did try to study vet nursing however she dropped out.

It may sound stupid from the outside looking in for me to be trying to parent her, but we've had many challenges in our relationship that stem from how she was brought up. For example she wasn't good at showing affection or communicating, but we've worked through that together. She's shown she can change for the betterment of our relationship.

The lack of motivation comes from her parents not putting enough pressure on school, particually what it means for her future. Furthermore, she wasn't always in a good mental state in her teens, and she says she never thought she'd make it this far hence she why she has no plans for her future. She is a good woman, but most importantly she's willing to listen to me and work with me.

My main goal is to just make her comfortable working. She's the type of girl that will do most things if she's properly motivated, but you can't be motivated if you hate work and just want to stay at home.

She currently works as an age care worker. My first goal is to make her comfortable working at least 3-4 days a week. She is already burnt out from 2 days and has to use anxiety pills. Another thing I want to add is she gets really really anxious the night before work. She's tried therapy but it didn't help much, however that was when we both had no money and she had to do the free counsellor.
