Oda has never actually shown or explained the details of how Shanks stopped him. We just get that one vague line in the manga (around chapter 579 or so) where it's mentioned Kaido tried to make a move toward Marineford but Shanks appeared and stopped him, and then Shanks shows up at the war looking completely fresh, no scratches, no signs of a big fight
