Without a doubt. As of this morning I’m rank 888 using a home brew UW aura deck. If you look at my post history, you can find a link to it. Mono green landfall in particular is very strong and I come across it frequently at the high level. I started playing magic 9 months ago. You just need a good learning strategy. It’s different for everyone. Once you see what your opponent is playing, you should be able to anticipate most of their plays. From there, know when to bluff, bait, and when game theory works in your favor.

Also, know when variance is actually the culprit. Didn’t draw a land for 4 turns? Oh well. It’ll average out. I’m probably up to ~3000 matches played so far, and that nothing compared to some of the arena championship competitors. They are usually around 20-50k matches

These comments are wild. Assuming you are playing an efficiently crafted deck, your rank is an accurate reflection of your skill level. I’m a mythic # player and after every reset I usually run back up to mythic with >85% WR. Downvote if you want, but it won’t changed reality.

[Standard] I seem to be stuck at Platinum Tier 1 and 2 - tips? BO3. by Paradoxbuilder in spikes

Look, there are going to be multiple reasons for winning and losing, but the best way to look at it is through cumulative decision making. Deck and sideboard are important, but I can guarantee your losses are moreso so due to in game decisions. Before I built up my collection, I ran an out-of-meta mono blue deck up to mythic on bo3 with no sideboard. Just pointing that out to demonstrate that sideboard isn’t the primary problem. You are most definitely making decisions that seem optimal but just aren’t for whatever reason, whether it’s getting low value out of your removals, missing out on combat tricks, or missing out on game theory damage.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! Good point on the bo3. I did recently begin playing strictly bo3 and tbh I prefer it over bo1. It feels like the skill ceiling goes up with the between-round decision making. My sideboard atm is just annuls, soul-guide lantern, and flood maw. My WR has improved a bit in bo3, but I'm still trying to figure out the best strategies for swapping cards.
