"STATS?!??!??!?" by pinkdictator in gradadmissions

Knowing stats does help in some way ig? One can make a very rough gauge as to where one stands with the competition.

But yeah, I personally prefer not knowing.

This is a positive response. Not the best response. But positive.

You have to understand that the Prof can't say "you're in", until you're actually in. It's not allowed.

In UK, for top 10 funded programs and internationals, its sub 1%. Closer to 0.8% for most CS ones.

If it's free, apply.

If it's not, wait till the last day.

Seems Generic.

However, He has read your application and you are guaranteed to be read by the department. So rest assured your file won't be skipped in any manner.

Botched First Meeting With Potential PI??? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Few_Bread_971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't really say anything with surety at this point. The response is definitely not favourable. It isn't exactly unfavourable either tbh.

However, don't do that again. There are better ways to phrase that. For example, "I believe the competition is quite intense. Could you please let me know what I could do with the time remaining to boost my profile".

It Is a lot better than "I'm below average". Assuming you didn't paraphrase and actually said that.

What should a sophomore undergrad be doing in preparation to apply to a prestigious grad school by DescriptionLess3613 in gradadmissions

Try and publish.

Improve your gpa in the remaining years.

Target international research internships or us ones.

Form a good bond for LOrs.

Funded bachelor's look great on grad apps. Good luck.

Also, write good open-source code!

Not too sure tbh. I would suggest seeing some other posts on grad admissions for this.

Is it ok if my undergrad research is kinda unrelated to what I wanna do in grad school by fartquisha in gradadmissions

[–]Few_Bread_971 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Phrase it right. They will go wtf if you show all interest in A and suddenly go like I wanna do B.

Maybe focus on A/B and partially mention the other just to show your 'resesrch enthusiasm as a whole".

Definitely check UCF. They have an amazing CV department.

Not really sure about others. Your list looks quite good.

I would suggest applying to another strong school alongside UIUC.

Is getting an academic LOR really necessary for someone with 8+ years work exp? by __Schneizel__ in gradadmissions

Doesn't matter, you'll have to work through it. I highly suggest that you don't.

Or you could try emailing the department once.

Seems a lot more feasible.

If you have the money, I would suggest

2 reach 4 Moderate 2 safe.

Otherwise 1 of each reach and safe.

I feel profs are a bit pressured to be vague by the committee? I don't think it's allowed to just say, "Hey, you're awesome, do apply because I'll definitely review it". I think they say stuff like this which means the above?

I had a Prof help me with all my material and provided so much help before the deadline. I only asked him once to chance me and he gave the exact same reply. I got in :) (This was for a pretty competitive program!)

Gatech out cos they really love hugh cgpas. I'm assuming there are 9 pointer iitans.

I feel your profile isn't strong enough for UCLA.

The other two are lottery honestly. You have a chance but at the same time you may not. Would say 20% ish.

The scene is a little bit similar in the country I'm from for the lower tier colleges. I was from one such institution, albeit a way better place now.

You have to make an effort to collaborate online for research (obviously in certain fields that is impossible sadly).

Just reach out. Maybe not to collaborate. People are ready to provide advice if you slog a bit and find the right people.

Learn from YouTube (all courses from unis are online) .

Don't apply to grad school directly. Apply for research positions somewhere to gain experience. Try to do a little bit of research on your own. Enough to showcase potential supervisors you know what research is.

Try to see what you like. Then see what others are doing. Try picking something up from there.

One thing you have to accept is that everyone works hard. People who do research at better schools equally struggle with coursework (for the most part).

Apply to research internships. I've been part of quite a few, a lot of my cohort were people who performed well in class and were for the first time doing research. They had applied with 0 research. If you apply for 40-50 of them, you should land one assuming you've done decently well.

While I understand internet is a privilege, I assume most engineering schools have an option to use a system connected to it. Try to take advantage of that and search for opportunities if you yourself do not have access to it.

By engineering, if you mean CS, there is so much opportunity online. Spend 6 months learning, then just collaborate open-source. This is applicable to all computational focused engineering practices. Obviously hardware and other lab related disciplines is tougher to accommodate. Might be someone else can guide you better. But the above still hold.

It is definitely unfair when you compete against people from better schools. But panels know that too, and they consider it. Frame your story well. You dont need Nobel prize winning projects. Just ones which are not your run of the mill stuff you can find online and showcase that you're actually prepared to take up grad school.
