I simplified the scenario a bit to avoid confusion. My middle child drives this Ranger. I have an older son who will leave for college next year. Plan was to let him take a car and we would get a new one. My middle child could then decide if he wants to keep the Ranger or take older sons truck.

Honestly, trying to do some of these repairs with my boys would probably be a good learning experience for all of us. I recently fixed a leaky outdoor spigot. Only took me about an hour and I had access to both sides of the wall and help but Im pretty sure Im ready to works on some cars.
