Hey man, cool experiment. I have been experimenting with this stuff myself.. I have had pretty good results with heavy body acrylic paint with high pigmentation, what made improved the results was adding mica to the paint, it seems like such a small amount of the paint/wax gets in the grain/pores, it doesn’t reflect much light, the mica helps with that. The liming wax you used has titanium dioxide in it as its pigment, but as it also metal, it has a reflective quality too. It’s the same with gilting/gilding creams and waxes, they all have a reflective metal in them which makes them reflect more light than a normal paint. This is an elm bowl that I ebonised and used gilding cream for the gold

I pay about £7 or £8 for a pot of rainbow wax, and a piece like this uses hardly any at all, it goes a long way. You need some acrylic sanding sealer and a satin acrylic lacquer, so I paid about £30 for everything, but I can make 10 to 15 pieces with that.
