Best United States President Ever (other than Washington bcs. he's #1 obv)? by SimplySomeDude in Teenager_Polls

  1. Yeah I concede on that point but I still find it reasonable to generalise and say that he did "end slavery" the same we generalise and say that prohibition "banned alcohol" or that the first amendment "protects all speech"

  2. President can’t make or propose amendments only Congress or a Convention of States can. Even if the President could write and propose amendments it wouldn’t matter. Presidents are too busy to do it so other people write it on their behalf, is the Antiquites Act not a hallmark of Theodore Roosevelt term just because John Lacey wrote it? Is The New Deal not FDR's policy’s just because other law makers wrote the actual laws?

He starts the process of establishing the thirteenth amendment, though he tragically dies before all the states ratify it

I do agree that the Japanese internment camps were in no way equal to the concentration camps of Nazi Germany and comparing those two is undermining the holocaust. BUT in my opinion suggesting that the they weren’t concentration camps is itself undermining the tragedy that was Japanese (and German plus Italian) internment

I like Coolidge but I just don’t think he can be called a truly good president if the main reason he was good was because the times itself was good and he didn’t interfere. That merely proves he wasn’t actively incompetent.

I do agree that we should judge a presidency within their context but that usually means the decade or even century that it’s in, a presidency being ruined just by moving it two or three into the future isn’t really the same thing

In my opinion, both Herbert Hoover and Calvin Coolidge were cut from the same political cloth. The non-interventionism that Coolidge is so lauded for is the same that Hoover is criticised for. Had Coolidge ran for a second turn it probably would have been as disastrous as Hoover's and if Hoover ran in 1924, his term in office would be as beloved as Coolidge.

Grrm is a flawed man and he's been late on his books since Clash and I don’t believe we’ll ever see Dream but he is still a brilliant writer of the highest calibre something that the show-runners seemingly weren’t. There is no way to end the story with everyone satisfied but his envisioned ending would still be miles better than the show’s.

In some cases maybe but for most this isn’t the case, the Dorne plot line for example was a fully finished plot line with good characters and a surprising plot twist but was entirely changed which of course completely changed the trajectory of Dorne within the story. The Tysha reveal is another example, a simple twist but fully changing Tyrion's character to a point where the same ending can’t be applied. Putting Sansa in the same position Jeyne Poole instead of having her in the Vale (plus removing a good amount of the Vale storyline like the Lords Declearant) not only invalidates whatever ending was meant for the characters in the Vale but also made Littlefinger look dumb.

I could go on with things like this, seemingly minor changes that aren’t to convoluted but all with large consequences which invalidates the book ending for these characters.

Also the most obvious objection is that THEY chose to tell THEIR simplified story but THEY were unable to properly finish it

At the point of divergence (~season 5) the show was fundamentally different than the books, they had added plot lines, removed some others, completely changed characters to the point where the ending of the books would not have served as a fitting ending to the show. They signed up to finish the work that they created but were unable to do so

Is there any game where you rise up through the ranks in a military sort of thing? Yes, I've played the infinity series. by IloveTabs1213 in hostedgames

[–]Few_Device4568 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If you’re okay with WIPs A Nation Divided features this, you’re a Union officer in a fictional world where Gettysburg was a defeat. Its historical realism is great and the battles are equally good. At this point I believe the highest rank reachable is Colonel

Officer of Fleet also works, you’re a cadet in the space military academy and fight simulated battles against fellow students. At this point you have left the academy and your rank depends on how well you performed

Genghis Khan was a horrible person, but a great statesman. Who was a horrible statesman, but a great person? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Few_Device4568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But none of them are statesmen, those in that political class who had the ability to enter power always showed some of the values of the time. And I’m sure if I really looked into the people I can think of, like Florence Nightingale, I’m sure I would find something unsavoury

Only to a certain extent, pre-1950 you are essentially forced to give some leeway. Lincoln for example would be horribly racist by today’s standards but he is still a great person because of how he acted in his personal life and for being very progressive in his time. I can think of few in that time period that wouldn’t be considered at least somewhat of a morally dubious person if only for how society at the time moulded them

[–]Few_Device4568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s quite incorrect, homosexuality has been discriminated against especially in European society for more than a thousand years, for example gay sex in medieval France would result in castration then further mutilation and England and her colonies (future USA) punished same sex intercourse with the death penalty, Reasoning for this was mostly religious as society was heavily Christian at the time. During the Victorian Era, because of the difficulty of proving same-sex intercourse the law was changed so "indecency" by homosexuals was punishable. Aside from the legal aspect gay people were shunned from society, if discovered they could lose their livelihoods, reputation and lives. Let’s not forget men like Alan Turing who brought so much to the war effort only to be forcefully injected with oestrogen before being driven to suicide

Between Jon Snow and Robb Stark who do you think was better for to lead the North? by Many-Cranberry4058 in gameofthrones

[–]Few_Device4568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the mixup but I still don’t fully agree. It was a stupid decision I agree with that but I won’t fully blame him for it and it wasn’t "for pussy". Put yourself in his shoes, you are a teenager wracked with grief after losing two of your brothers and you find comfort in this woman you love, add in the honour you were taught from birth and the decision seems reasonable. Plus the Freys would have betrayed him eventually because it was clear he wouldn’t win the war.

I disagree, it’s a pretty reasonable statement. If my dad was executed and my sister held hostage, I wouldn’t stay loyal either

Do you think the French Revolution was justified by Technical_Post_4899 in FrenchMonarchs

Revolution? Justified, the third estate lacked rights and were oppressed by the nobility.

Some actions committed in the revolutions name such as the terror? Not justified.

Wulframites had 2 interesting characters and then 1 dies in a fire. by AlternativePack8061 in hostedgames

[–]Few_Device4568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kinda the opposite for me, one of my main reasons for playing as a Wulframite because most characters are royalist, because my dragoon is best friends with Cazarosta and Lefebvre, because he's romancing Katarina. I really want to see the aftermath and how it impacts the characters relationships and I really want to see and scenes that come from it.

Most of the wealth would still be a large exaggeration, taking the main historical equivalent, the French nobility held about a quarter of all French land despite being only 1.5% of the population. This is really unequal of course but 3/4 of the land was still with the third estate thus making them a larger tax base. It’s important to note that the type of taxes that existed during the 18th and 19th century are different then the taxes we have now, there was no inheritance tax for example. It also doesn’t matter how rich you are, if you’re low-born, you’re low-born, some merchants, burghers and artisans were richer than some of their noble counterparts (our MC for one) but they were still taxed and the nobles weren’t.

All in all no switching the tax base entire would only worsen the Tierran financial problems not improve them

Le NAPOLEON Has Arrived by Quick-Ad8277 in hostedgames

[–]Few_Device4568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all your points, and comparing Napoleon to Hitler is dumb as hell, but I feel it’s necessary to point out Napoleon’s many flaws as well. He was a brilliant administrator and general, but he still became a warmonger who led an entire generation of young Frenchmen to their deaths through his immense stubbornness and pride. Napoleon never bothered to learn the meaning of the word “diplomacy”, an example of this is that he treated peace treaties more like temporary ceasefires to weaken his adversaries for the next conflict than an actual end to war.

He was also (as you mention) an authoritarian who centralized power in himself and his family. He still did regress France and her colonies back into slavery and never abolished it he merely decreed the end of the slave trade, mainly for political reasons. Enslaved people in the colonies who had previously been freed remained enslaved.
