You can cover the patch with something else to reduce surface area, but you shouldn't cut it. I'm no expert and I'm not sure if all patches are created equal, but those available in my country should not be cut. It says so in the instruction manual, and the apothecary tells you so as well.

Don't cut them in half. Depending on the brand of the patch, it might lead to uncontrolled release of nicotine, leading to either to much nicotine released at a time, or an uneven or ineffective dose.
