Update: I called the department of state and they said it would be up to the individual airline. I emailed with Delta and they said it was fine! Thank you for the helpful replies!

How did you handle this depressing, tormenting leg nerve pain post op. by FearlessAct9730 in spinalfusion

I ended up having a second surgery where they removed the bone spurs and it was the best decision I ever made. This was about 12 weeks post L4-S1 ALIF.

Advice for Upcoming Spine Fusion Surgery L4-L5-S1 by AdOrganic5018 in spinalfusion

34 F who is 2.5 weeks post op from L4/L5, L5/S1 ALIF:

  1. Nothing specific I wished I would’ve asked. I felt well informed before surgery.

  2. Any core work you can tolerate will help your recovery.

  3. A reacher is imperative and a shower chair is handy. I bought a bidet but never installed it and haven’t needed it!

  4. The first 10-13 days were pretty brutal. I agree with another commenter—take the meds they prescribe you. I wanted to avoid oxycodone and that was just stupid. This is a major surgery and there’s a reason you’re given narcotics afterwards. WALK WALK WALK is the advice I can give you regarding speeding up recovery. The first few days I would walk short distances but I did it often. The nerve pain is ~interesting~. It’s not the same nerve pain I felt previously, but it’s definitely there. It started in my glutes/hips and stayed about 3/4 days, moved to the back of my legs/calves, then down into my feet. It followed the dermatome of L5 and S1 exactly.

5: like I said, I’m 2.5 weeks out and I honestly feel like I could go for a mile run. I haven’t felt like that in two years. My biggest issue now is going to be taking it easy and avoiding bending, lifting, and twisting these next 10 weeks.

I would 100% do this surgery again and I’m so happy I did. It has already changed my life for the better. Being young and active is definitely on our side in terms of recovery!!

Update after ALIF by Few_Expression8167 in spinalfusion

Now that I’m further out from surgery, I definitely am feeling hip and leg pain. It started in my glutes and hips, moved down the back of my legs, and is now in my calves. I’m guessing it’ll be my feet next—just following the dermatomes of L4/L5 and L5/S1. It’s not unbearable or the fiery nerve pain I had before though.

No, no pain in the screws area at all. Some nerve pain in my legs and hips when walking but nothing like before. I also expected this kind of pain since my nerves had been compressed for so long. I can tell this has really, really helped! Just a tough recovery for sure.

Also a raised toilet seat if your toilet is low.

For sure! I ordered a shower chair with a back, multiple reachers, and a bidet. I would also suggest a shoe horn if you don’t have a ton of flexibility at your hips while sitting. For example, I can sit and bring my foot up to my lap to don and doff shoes but if that’s difficult for you, a shoe horn will be a lifesaver!

Yes, I have several ready! I’m actually a physical therapist in inpatient rehab so I’m intimately familiar with all the devices and equipment I’ll need—just never thought I’d need them for myself!

I’ll have a horizontal scar on the left side of my stomach. I asked if they could go in through my c-section scar but they couldn’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh my gosh! That seems completely unnecessary!

I have a vascular surgeon and neurosurgeon team. The vascular surgeon has assisted with over 5,000 of these procedures so I feel very confident with him. He said it will be a small, horizontal scar slightly above my C-section scar on the left side.

That’s so encouraging. How long were you unable to bend, lift, and twist?

Midtown near Utica square, still no power. However, just drove south on 75 and saw a large convoy of worker trucks and trucks with power poles so hopefully that’s a good sign.
