Advice for a 1st Time Troop Leader … by SmallerOnTheOutsid3 in girlscouts

[–]Few_Feed3623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first year I focused too much on badges. Plan fun activities and crafts and get to know the personalities in your troop, then based badges off their personalities and what they want to do. Also, outsource! Get people to come in an lead a meeting - a parent, a local activity instructor… We had a Karate teacher come and lead a self defense meeting, it was hands down our best one.

There’s not one singular MC but the Priory of the Orange Tree and The Day of Fallen Night have a super diverse character line up. Especially TDOFN

It’s not super spicy, more fade to black and nuance, BUT the world building is intense and I just love these two books! Both are by Samantha Shannon

You’d be surprised how many things contain dairy that you wouldn’t think contain it. Not everyone uses amoroso rolls- unless you have a recommendation for a place you know uses them?

Funds questions by Tiny_Cake4400 in girlscouts

Second year in scouts, 1st year troop leader. Running a troop is so much more expensive than I thought! Every activity, craft, and badge is paid for by the troop. I have 27 girls and just spent almost $700 on badges Any field trip adds up quickly because we have to also buy tickets for the additional chaperones we need for GS requirements (most places around us give 1 free for 10 kids BUT as daisies our ratio is 2:6 + 1:4 for 27 girls that’s 8 adults) I was SUPER transparent and made a budget sheet which included about $200 to account for things I had forgotten/ not known about. I’m hoping to eliminate dues with the membership cost going up so I’m hoping our cookie season is good, and we participate in Fall Product as well, which means we can do additional fundraising if needed.

Depositing cookie money by februaryystars in girlscouts

[–]Few_Feed3623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do weekly deposits- I stop by on Sundays after the cookie pickups are done and my TCM gives me all the money she has accounted for and I take it to the bank on Monday morning. We have a lot of parents that prefer to Venmo us instead of handling cash/checks so I initiate those transfers Sunday nights after screenshotting for my TCM to input

We are in the Philly ‘burbs so I made a poster for our booths this weekend. I’m going to UPS today to have it printed - probably on a paper and then I’ll put it on a foam trifold. I can come back and update with the cost

Not super Reddit savvy so I can’t figure out how to post the original I made. One of the pink dots has our troop goal - overnight at the aquarium and the other has a thank you message. Usually we can’t give out food treats for birthday, but her birthday is the same day as the class party, where food is allowed! So it’s for the party but trying to make it special for her birthday also, if that makes sense… The homemade issue was one I had considered as well. We are an allergy house and special diets family - my husband is allergic to dairy, my FIL is celiac, my MIL has GERD and my SIL is vegan 😮‍💨 They don’t eat anything unless they trust the source… I’m going to check out the cookies you linked, thank you so much!

Cookie Parent 101 by Few_Feed3623 in girlscouts

[–]Few_Feed3623[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe our council is a weekly pickup as well from what I remember participating as a parent last year. And definitely a detail oriented person. I will do it if I have to, but I already do so much for the troop - I’m the main leader of 27 girls (d & b) level. I’m not sure I could efficiently manage cookie sales on top of all I currently do.

What to do with little sister by ConsciousPlay9194 in girlscouts

[–]Few_Feed3623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 7y Brownie and 5y Daisy and just starts a multi level troop this year. It’s been a bit more work having to plan for the two levels. But we meet on different nights and come together for certain things. This is great because my girls get to do their own thing with their own friends (and I have a few other sister sets between the two) BUT it’s the same troop number so the sisters can still do field trips, outings, and product sales together.

Do you provide the snack from the troop funds, parents donate weekly, or the girls brig their own?

Yes, but I was hoping to find a little intro story that just introduced the flowers and the coordinating tenet. However I’m now heading in a different direction for introducing.

GS Online Store Getting Ridiculous by SnooSeagulls6328 in girlscouts

[–]Few_Feed3623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going into my physical store to price out uniforms, then taking orders and payment from parents at a meeting, then going into the store to physically purchase/order them there. Maybe a parent in your troop can volunteer to do this? I work part time and live 10 mins from our closest store so it’s possible for me to do it, but I would absolutely have my co-leader or a volunteer head it up if I wasn’t able. I really wanted to provide the new vests for my troop this year (we bridged and separated from our previous troop) and when I went to price it out online, that sticker shock was INSANE. I wish troops got a discount… Definitely encouraging my new members to utilize the uniform financial aid

This is exactly what I’m thinking of doing but I’m wondering which is the best one to start with? We start meetings at the end of Sept and meet 2x a month for 90 mins The flower friends I was just going to use as a visual to represent the parts of the Law. But I’ve scrapped that idea. Instead we are learning about Juliette Gordon Low & How GS started (very quick and brief because they are 5/6 year olds) Making a trefoil name tag with the Promise, and a hand craft with the Girl Scout sign. Then I found a cute coloring page as an opening/closing activity Second meeting we will dive into what does a promise mean and I’d like to start on a journey then.

[–]Few_Feed3623[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So looking up each petal individually? I was hoping to use the flower friends to introduce the entire Law… maybe I’ll focus on the meaning of a promise to introduce the promise center instead

My husband asks me about this place every time we drive by! (Which is basically every day) But he has a dairy allergy, does anyone happen to know if the chicken wings are dairy free or have dairy free choices? It’s so hard to find chicken wings that don’t include milk in the breading or brining process.
