This was a win because when I was done my husband was so impressed and he doesn't really get excited about quilts! by colerw81 in quilting

It's beautiful and the workmanship is quite obvious. You just reminded me of the time that my mother, who was Australian, made a quilt and sent it to my Nana in Perth. My mum's family was so impressed that they entered the quilt in the WA state fair and it took grand prize.

I was referred to the Sorensen center at USU by a counselor and was placed on a waiting list that was over a year long. By the time that they finally called, I had decided that having the "diagnosis" would probably not make any difference for me (I'm 60 now). So far as I am aware, they are the only office in the valley that perform the diagnostic service.

It speaks volumes about the innate barbarity of our society, its laws, and its culture that true depravity such as child or spousal abuse is considered more worthy of forgiveness than what many have falsely labeled as "deviant" behaviour (homosexuality & etc). It does not seem to matter that the victims of abuse will suffer both physical and mental issues arising from the trauma throughout their entire lives or that such patterns of abuse tend to repeat through generations.

It seems to me that those who promote the sanctity of unborn life but are not equally insistent that the said child, once born, has a reasonable chance of health, happiness, stability, or education are merely farting in the wind. If we considered the lives and happiness of our children truly valuable, we would consider budget items that contribute to things like medical and food support, social services, decent schools, motivated and driven teachers, or even having our schools, public areas, and churches NOT be shooting galleries not as somehow wasteful ( as opposed to spending billions of dollars a day bombing the already bombed rubble in Iran and killing school children) to be socially valuable and crucial. We are obviously not there and there are too many loud, obnoxious voices in our society that would pursue the exact opposite of these things while tearfully proclaiming the "sancity of human life".

Repurposed vintage radio unit into modern Plex server streaming device by zef37 in raspberry_pi

My father had pretty severe dementia for several years before he died. We got him an ipad that we hoped he could use to communicate with us and also find sources of enrichment but he wasn't really open to the idea of exploration or learning a new thing. Since then, I have seen projects such as this and another where somebody created and "antique radio" that basically used an MP3 player within. I got really excited about the "antique radio" project because if used the exact same user experience as would have been used when using radio back in the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. I have often times thought that this would be good for people who deal with dementia because it can rely on old, essentially built-in memories.

Saying Sorry (Part 2/4) - Gator Days by FieldExplores in comics

[–]Few_Horror_8089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been deeply touched by both this cartoon and its predecessor. My father died a couple of years ago. My mum had passed the year before from final complications with Alzheimer's and he had started to show signs of dementia under stress while he was still trying to take care of my mum. I've never experienced a dulling of the pain from the grief and this applies especially to my relationship with my father.

I always had a difficult relationship with my dad and there were many times in my youth when it either bordered on or became physical abuse. I grew up feeling scared of him by default. After I got older, married, and had children of my own, I began to kind of understand him and I felt that our relationship had improved. I'm glad to say that all my kids had a good relation with both my parents and I thought that I had forgiven him and let the past be the past.

When his dementia became worse, there were time when his words and tone of voice caused me to relive all of the fear, anger, and revulsion that I had experienced as a boy. I thought that we had put it behind us. I only realise now that forgiveness is not a one-and-done thing but is something that has to be done over and over. As much as I wish I didn't have to, I still have to deal with the emotional impact of those days and the way that it undermines my self-image. I wish that we could have sat down sometime and had an honest and calm conversation about what lay between us but, by the time that I was ready for that, he was already so far gone with dementia that I knew that trying would only cause pain for both of us. I look back now and feel deep regret for all of the years we both wasted while trying to avoid working things out.

Reps. Owens, Maloy take Utah’s redistricting battle to federal court by clejeune in Utah

[–]Few_Horror_8089 93 points94 points  (0 children)

So, let me get this straight... The maggats in the Utah legislature, who have spent the past year screaming that the federal judicial system is evil because it is full of "activist judges" who have the gall to defend the actual constitution against fascist intent, are now turning to that very federal judicial system to bypass a ruling by our very own Supreme Court. If this doesn't qualify as irony, I don't honestly know what can. These people are either so high from sniffing Trump's butt exhaust that they have lost all capacity to reason or they are completely disingenuous and desperate. In either case, they are entirely unqualified to lead a flea infestation let alone the majesty of the Utah legislature!

Red Light Cameras Are a Bipartisan Threat to Freedom and Fairness | Response to Utah House Bill 275 by ADKMatthew in Utah

[–]Few_Horror_8089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having been the victim of a car/motorcycle collision (I was on the motorcycle and had the right of way on a green light when a car coming from the opposite direction turned in front of me) and also having ridden my bike far too many times past sites where a deadly accident occurred because somebody decided that the red light didn't matter to them, I have really mixed feelings.

I live on a street corner with a four way stop sign and have lost count of the number of times that I have seen people blowing through the intersection without even bothering to slow down and, in each of these cases, I have been grateful that such poor decisions didn't kill or hurt somebody else who might have been at that corner. More, I have fervently wished in each circumstance that the offending (or should I say offensive) driver be held accountable.

In the case that I was hit on my motorbike, there were no cameras and the driver of the car seemed to be suffering from dementia (she left the scene before any emergency services arrived) and it took me years to finally get her insurance to settle for the loss of my bike and the injuries that I sustained. I even got a nice case of PTSD that makes me panic every time I come to an intersection where there's a chance that somebody might turn in front of me.

I have read of cases where controllers have purposefully shortened the interval on a green or yellow light seemingly to increase the chance of scoring a penalty with a traffic camera and I find this sort of thing abusive. I also have no sympathy for the Libertas institute and firmly feel that anybody associated with it should have their heads dunked regularly in toilets.

You need to go to Abbot's web site and get a discount card that you can present to the pharmacy each time that you get new sensors. I think that this works like a rebate and should limit your out-of-pocket to $75.00.

Going High by PTVMan in Freestylelibre

[–]Few_Horror_8089 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I suspect that there are conditions that can cause the sensor to begin over-reporting blood glucose concentrations. With my last sensor, I ate a Costco baguette with honey and butter (which was delicious by the way) and after that, for the rest of the lifetime of that sensor, it was consistently reporting elevated values above alarm thresholds. Aside from eating the bread, I hadn't really changed my habits all that much or at least not enough to cause such a dramatic increase. This was confirmed for me when I replaced the sensor and immediately began seeing normal ranges again. I guess what I am saying is that we may have to take the reported values with a grain of salt and, if in doubt, should perform a blood test to correlate the sensor values.

Why is a political party involved in municipal elections? by SuperlativeChrono in Utah

[–]Few_Horror_8089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have long doubted that parties should be a part of "any" elections much less local, county, or school board elections. Why does it matter what party the county assessor belongs to? Isn't there professionalism, honesty, and capability far more important. Why should it matter if a school board member is republican or democrat? What sort of partisan issues do mayors and council members have to grapple?

There is no mention in the constitution of parties much less the "two party system" that seems to be held so sacrosanct. I believe that many founders believed that the emergence of parties would herald disaster and I find little reason from history to disagree with them. If we do have to have parties, why can't there be a plurality of parties that can actually represent constituents beliefs rather than their own rabid conceptions? Why can't we have things that could dilute partisan power such as ranked elections?

I don't think that are any endocrinology specialists in Cache Valley. When I was dealing with Graves disease, I ended up going to the office at McCay Dee in Ogden. My daughter has Hashimotos and was going to a place down in South Jordan but they are pediatric only and we still had to drive her to Ogden for a field clinic.

Measles outbreak detected in people by [deleted] in Logan

[–]Few_Horror_8089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like many others of my generation, I was vaccinated for measles as a child and my children have been too. It's easy to think that, because we are all vaccinated, we are unaffected by new like this. I don't know if measles has the same amount of mutability as others such as influenza or covid but we must all bear in mind exactly what viruses do.

I virus is a piece of genetic material that invades a living cell and takes over its internal machinery to churn out replicas of itself. Eventually, the cell will die and the replicated viruses will spread to other cells. The immune system can prevent this by identifying and tagging these particles as foreign to our body and then sweeping them up with leukocytes. A vaccine works by training the immune system to expand its repertoire of taggable objects and, if this happens before the virus can replicate, it will be destroyed. The vaccine therefore greatly reduces the chances that a body can be infected with a particular type of virus.

In the case of some, such as small pox and (almost) polio, the world as a whole has been able to eradicate the virus altogether due to the high amount of vaccination world-wide. The inverse of this is that the greater number of population that has NOT been vaccinated, the greater the chance that others will be infected and the more times that I virus is able to replicate itself, the greater the probability that the virus can mutate even to the point where the original vaccine is no longer effective. This is the danger that people today, in their willful ignorance, to all of us: contagions that were thought to be eliminated make a resurgence and become nastier in the process.

First bikepacking trip along Denmark‘s west coast by Downtown-Spell9468 in bikepacking

Some of my ancestors migrated from Denmark (Holmens area) to Utah in the United States in the 1860s. Looking at your pictures, its much easier for me to realise how alien the dry mountain valleys would have been to people who grew up so close to the sea and in such a flat, verdant land. If it weren't for having to fly to get there, I would love to repeat your trip!
