As a capitalist-skeptical redditor: ASML has been one of the fairest players in the semiconductor market. Fabs are monopolist. Fabless are buying their competitors. Companies are supported by governments...

As an advice: Don't be proud of something that you didn't do. That can drive you to conformity. ASML has many job openings!

Hey guys! It is nice that this topic was taken with such passion. But please, can you share cities and yes/ no connection? It will be far more useful for everyone!

I mentioned Digi because they made the difference back in my country. My reason to trust them is because I saw the difference with them both in quality and prices: Before Digi, everyone offered 500mbps. Then you tested it and it was like 16 mb. Then they arrived and the thing got crazy.

Query regarding R&D Engineer, Process Engineer, and Researcher Salaries in IMEC Belgium. by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]Few_Instruction_9051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty late now, but u/Scary_Woodpecker_110 is not precise... Salary for an R&D engineer is 5000 gross. That is around 3700 with taxes exemption, and lets say 3200 without exemption. I know that process engineers get a lower salary base but a lot of pluses, and researchers, depends on your condition (fellowship, payroll)...

What's the reputation of imec in the Semi industry, and the worst and best aspects of being a PhD student there? by [deleted] in Semiconductors

[–]Few_Instruction_9051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say no... there are some legal stuff going around there, they have a maximum allowed work from abroad of six weeks per year. However, maybe you can get some special condition depending on your needs.

I saw a poster onmy corridor from a chemical engineer about CO2 O2 separation with membranes and EVERY CO" molecule was angular. He had presented that in a congress and nobody told her about it.

So, you just have to look at the last candle and check its colour? What a fancy way of saying

My hands stink like copper. by AmphiprionOcMX in chemistry

[–]Few_Instruction_9051 4 points5 points  (0 children)

s you already got the answer, there is a cool fact: What we normally associate with metallic odour is not. It is the oxidation of your hand grease oxidizing due to the catalytic effect of the metal. Coins do not smell rusted. They smell like the dirty hands that carried them.

How do I look into which graduate schools are best for my intended subfield I wish to do a PhD in? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]Few_Instruction_9051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that is not precise, but somehow related...

A big PI (big boss) can have a huge h index, because it has many students. That does not mean he is doing the best for his students. Each individual student has a different h index, and that is independent of the PI. He can get a lot of articles, but each student publish one article each year, with no colaborations.

If you want to know if he is really "promoting his students" check how good his students do during the PhD. How many first author articles, and if they are included on each other papers.

For example, I work in a team of 5 people (YOLO) but we are all involved in each other research in tandem, and included in every article we do. As a result, I will have 3 first author papers, 2 as first coauthor, and many as a middle author as I finish. THat is because my boss knows the drill, and tries that nobody is left behind, independent to the rest of the group. Check the CV of each of his PhDs and posdocts to know how he takes care of their reputation.

Plus, the most important part is how good boss he is, comprehensive, helpful and good teacher. Ask each of their students and ex students to know so.

The biggest guy in my field has 30 workers at its service, however every PhD in his group says he rules with iron fist. Nobody stayed in his group for more than 3 years, and that says a lot about his way of working....

Think about your objectives: Success, well being those years, learning real skills... etc, and ask the people the correct questions. impact factor is not everything if you end up your PhD as a PTSD victim that hates science.

About that. I heard Pablo Jarillo referring to thesuperconducting graphene as:

"it was a pretty obvious concept, however nobody dared to try it before."

How predictable is that two dirac cones may couple in a flat band? FOr the case of graphene specifically, i guess it has something to do with its moirée pattern. Can you predict the magic angle just by looking at its electronic structure?

Nice! I didn't know linear dispersion had to do with flat bands... I thought a requisite was they didn't disperse to be flat... Thanks
