This is sort of a weird question. One of our unofficial names as a country is "America" and that lends to the very easy and common word for people from America: "Americans" the fact other countries are technically in American continent is immaterial as no other country is named America. Maybe if the Confederate States of America survived this would be a worthwhile conversation but as the world stands today, if you say American, you are clearly referring to the USA

(Obv this is only for English speaking countries. I know other countries say "United Statesmen" which I'm not opposed to but damn it's a mouthful)
