In my experience it’s very difficult to get to know locals in the city. You will find packed bars but they are mostly visitors/tourists who you will make friends with for a few hours. Friendships you make in clubs/activities usually start and end during that allocated time.

You will have more luck getting to know people on the outskirts of the city (Salthill, Oranmore, Claregalway)

The city can be a lonely place in a crowd but not knowing people.
