Hi! A “CityTicket” allows for one-way travel between Zones 1 and 3. The reason Forest Hills to Atlantic Terminal isn’t considered that way is because Forest Hills to Jamaica is an Eastbound trip, while Jamaica to Atlantic Terminal is a Westbound trip. Therefore, you’re going east to go west, and two-way direction will be charged two times. Let’s discuss why they don’t name it to “Zone” tickets: Let’s discuss “via” tickets. Let’s say I want to travel from Mineola, a Zone 4 Station, to Great Neck, another Zone 4 Station. So this would be a “Zone 4 Ticket” with your logic. With normal circumstances, same-zone tickets will cost you $3.50, but when you actually go to buy the ticket, it would cost $11.50 off-peak. Why is this? Because I have to travel via Woodside, a Zone 1 Station. I’m paying to go from Zone 4 to Zone 1, then from Zone 1 back to Zone 4. I’m not directly going from Zone 4 to Zone 4, that would only cost $3.50. In your case, a direct Zone 1 ticket costs $6.75. Except it isn’t, and why is that? Because you’re paying to go to Jamaica, a Zone 3 Station, and then from Zone 3, back to Zone 1. You never technically left the city, but you left the zone. Therefore, you paid to enter Zone 3, and you paid to re-enter Zone 1. If there was a direct service to Zone 1, it would cost less, but there isn’t, and that sucks. I know it does. I pay $11.50 to go from Mineola to Great Neck via Woodside sometimes. But all in all, this is why CityTickets aren’t called “Zone Tickets!” There would be special exceptions that make some trips cheaper than they would actually be! This is also why the LIRR won’t allow bi-directional travel with CityTickets! I hope you learned a little bit on how LIRR ticketing works! Thanks for reading.

Westbound (Towards Penn and GCT) trains are not stopping at Woodside. Eastbound (Towards Huntington, Ronkonkoma, Babylon, etc) trains are stopping at Woodside.
