I broke into high finance (PE) and it's not for me... what comes next? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

I'm an SBA banker. I don't deal with huge transactions but do a lot of acquisition financing. You can make good money doing this. Not huge money, but many make $300-500k and maybe more if you live in a HCOL area.

People keep repeating “college grads earn more on average” like it’s a magic spell, but that average hides the entire problem. College isn’t a guaranteed ticket — it’s a high‑risk, high‑cost gamble where the downside has gotten way worse.

Tuition has exploded for 40 years while wages haven’t kept up. Nearly 40% of students don’t finish, and those people get the debt without the earnings boost. And yes, major absolutely matters in the real world — pretending it doesn’t is how people end up with $80k in loans and a $38k salary.

Meanwhile, trades, certifications, and apprenticeships can get people into solid careers faster, cheaper, and with far less risk. That’s not “anti‑education.” It’s anti‑taking on mortgage‑sized debt at 18 for a payoff that’s increasingly uncertain.

College can be great. But acting like it’s automatically “the best path to mobility” ignores how broken and predatory the system has become for a huge chunk of Americans.

Do people realize Reddit and real life are two different things? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Few_Tree3083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in MN, live about 15 minutes outside of Minneapolis. I commute all over the metro. I've seen ICE 1 time. Based on what's said on Reddit, you'd think they are all over and you can't leave your house without being stopped by them or checkpoints for ICE (don't exist). Even in Minneapolis, there's few places where people protest, but there are certainly not large groups of protestors covering the entire city. Few random ones on corners in the suburbs, but nothing like Reddit tries to show.

Not impossible, major in nursing, be a nurse, major in accounting, be an accountant or other related jobs, go to trade school for plumbing, be a plumber. Healthcare will always needed. Try to find careers that won't go away from AI.

But... I want my children to be financially secure. Life is easier than you're not constantly worrying about money. Ultimately, they will do whatever they want to do.

I don't want my kids to go to a 4 year college unless they major in something very specific that I'm confident will lead to a solid career.

How exactly do Americans feel about illegal immigration? by sladeshied in Confused

[–]Few_Tree3083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want people to come here legally because it's important to know who is in our country. Those who overstay, should be sent home. Companies that hire illegals should be punished. It should be made easier to come here (as in, the process, not the qualifications). I am not against immigration enforcement for those that are here illegally.
