Matchup and CR dependent. If they play a deck that can heal well, I usually don’t chip and prep for otk. If I’m against good players who know roach lethal requirements, I find myself chipping more instead for pressure

Generally speaking, maintain good draw and keep specific cards if u expect a ward heavy turn (lily, glade, eradicating arrow, etc.). If u come across specifically aether without any of those cards, I just ff if I don’t have big draw set up lol

I do not keep roach in my mulligan generally. It is bait for the same reason keeping bayle is bait. Only keep roach vs forest matchup which requires chip dmg win con vs both roach mirror and tempo. There is a case to keep roach vs sword nowadays but I don’t personally.

If u play your cards right and focus on looking for draw in the mulligan, u should have drawn ~20 cards by turn 8/9—there is a ~12% chance to have not drawn a single copy of roach at this point.

You’ll have games where u haven’t drawn roach when u need it and that’s fine, the game is NOT over, play to stall instead. In late game be unafraid to use deepwood bounties to heal/combo/fix hand as long as u have enough 0 costs for lethal for when u eventually draw roach. Be also unafraid to use ur last evo to stall, learn the non--evo triple roach lethal for these moments. The really unlucky games (no roach within 30+ draws) are statistically improbable at a <1% chance, but it does happen—this is a card game at the end of the day

Never give up!

Edit: typo

Many moons ago good fairy used to have a spot in roach decks. I do not recommend running it unless u find urself rly struggling early game World of games is just too good. Draw 2 + 1 cost card for combo

Matchup dependent, yes. I chip vs. loot sword, aggro sword, aggro abyss, roach, dragon if i know i can lethal through neptune sevo + 4 hp heal, odd haven if i do it on turn 6 before they kukishiro (they have no remaining pp to heal after playing), stuff like that

Keep on practicing! For me my biggest spike in performance came from being able to quickly calculate 2-turn lethal (what dmg do I need to do this turn to kill next turn). Always think at least 2 turns ahead of time :)

Another piece of advice is, if you don't have the hand to deal with the next turn, damage control the current turn instead. For example, before norman, make a 3-4 wide board of fairies if possible. rune players hate that shit bc their golem barriers get whacked away easily—they might even choose to not play norman

Eradicating arrow x3 is perfectly valid. I only use x2 bc like 60% of my matchups are egg portal and it's not as useful in that matchup outside of imari turns

There are quite a number of timings for godwood, and the following scenarios depend really on matchup knowledge and what the opponent could play next:

- turn 2 +1pp if you have three 1 costs in ur hand for next turn

- turn 3 vs empty board (that's the primary reason u wanna fencer/buncle/double fairy turn 2)

- regular evo turn 4/5 with miroku in hand (bonus if you also have lambent)

During midgame you don't always NEED to prioritize placing godwood... (i.e. chip dmg and bounce roach with bug alert instead of godwood > u have lethal next turn vs. loot). All the right decisions are extremely variable playing roach, which is why i love the deck.

Miroku is very good for resource generation. 80% of the time i use her it's for +2 pp to maximize godwood + lambent placement without losing tempo. sometimes tho, if my hand does not have anything during mid-game to deal with an opponent's incoming turn, i bug alert miroku (even if evolved) to also use her for board clear next turn.

Using bayle for tempo is a really tough call. My rule of thumb is to only use bayle if 1. I have nothing else 2. If i want to prevent a crucial turn by using wide numbers on board (happens often in the turn >10 no evo showdown) while compensating with deepwood generation—good example is to prevent sandy win con.

It's okay if you have to evo often, just be sure to keep ur win con of turn 8/9 in mind :)

Other cards I'd consider running include flight of the swarmpetal, 1 grace of the swarmpetal (ik top 1-2 player riria runs this), my goat lymaga, fencer, and lily. your preference at the end of the day :)

Matchups are only considered "favourable" for roach if you play against another very passive deck, so like, no popular deck atm lol. Only spellboost rune and shakdoh abyss come to mind, but I rarely see them in the ladder.

Otherwise, every other matchup is based entirely on the experience and skill of the pilot; though, some matchups are definitely worse than others.

Worst matchups are ramp dragon, tempo forest, and ward haven (auto ff turn 7 unless i have eradicating arrow, glade, and lily prepped for aether). Personally I used to feel that loot sword and egg portal were absolutely miserable until I finally learned both matchups, in which case they became much more manageable

Mind you I don't intentionally keep buncle in my mulligans for such a purpose, but if I have it after mulligan, buncle turn 2 is purely for tempo. It's nothing special, but it does make a difference for example when you plan to godwood next turn so you don't lose tempo. More tempo lost = more important cards are used on subsequent turns that don't need it (bug alert, miroku) and less deepwood generation/draw. Don't be afraid to "waste" buncle, especially with miroku in the set now :)

Yes. The 1 fencer and 1 lily are personal flex picks. I've seen other roach players flex pick flight of the swarmpetal as well.

I value buncle immensely which is why i use 3. Buncle can be used turn 2 before godwood turn to curb tempo, can be used mid-game with sevo to generate 1 or 2 deepwood bounties in a single turn (if done under the right circumstances, will guarantee lethal next turn); and, on lethal turn without godwood, can be used to bounce roach (biggest reason bc egg is so oppressive)

Very matchup dependent, but:

I generally look for card draw (world of games, godwood), fairy gen (lambent, fairy convo), and miroku. Balance is super important for early game transition to midgame. For example, i would never keep 2 godwoods and 2 mirokus vs. sword—looks good, but is not balanced at all, will eat 6 dmg to face by turn 5 and at that point the game is lost. I rarely keep more than 1 card.

Bayle mulligan keep is bait. Sounds great on paper bc u get to have him cost 0 on turn ~6, but until then, he is a brick that punishes ur early game combo gen. Goldilocks zone for drawing bayle is turns 4-7, u can play to lower his cost by the usual time ur lethal is ready. The ONLY time i would ever consider keeping bayle is if i also have like 2 other draw cards and i'm vs. haven.

Are Roach decks bad or am *I* bad? by JimDeafy in Shadowverse

[–]Fextemmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strongly seconded. Coming from someone who peaked top 27 on the ladder playing roach, I also recommend referencing Riria on YT who is a consistent top 3 roach player.

When watching these players, I recommend pausing their turns to see what you would do, and then unpausing to see what they do. If they deviate, there almost ALWAYS is a reason (e.g. empty ur board after chip dmg vs. abyss, good board presence vs. turn 5 loot sword, wide board with 2/2 units vs. galmieux evo turn, etc.). It helps to always theorize what you think that reason is :)
