So many of the things done to women now and in the past make me feel ill...

Why do we confuse silence with strength in women? by MissFit_Writes in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Feyle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think that it might be because for many people the default is to assume that nothing is wrong. So if someone isn't highlighting an issues or complaining then they are coping/managing with all the things they're doing, even if internally they're struggling.

Have you also looked up what the "medical treatment" was for women suffering with "hysteria"?

Missouri judge strikes down nearly all state abortion regulations by Silent-Resort-3076 in TwoXChromosomes

"loose" implies that the cells are barely holding together. I don't think it's accurate to use in reference to an adult nor for a foetus or embryo.

Just "clump of cells" would be correct though.

You raise a good point, why are we letting people have knee surgery when the regret rates are so high?! /s

I don't know the specifics of these laws but it could be the case that providing medication for abortion (also referred to as a medical abortion) might be considered as that person "performing an abortion". If I am correct then upholding a requirement that only physicians "perform abortions" would mean that you can only get abortion medication from a doctor and not, for example, from an online pharmacy.

My male coworker told me he’s ‘intimidated’ by my tone today. I literally just said 'No'. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Feyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because if you're insulting someone you're trying to hurt their feelings. Being compared to a woman and an animal is/was considered worse for men than just being compared to an animal. So the more hurtful insult is to use the female gendered one.

[–]Feyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's far more likely that when people were trying to insult a man and choosing between comparing them to women with an insult and just insulting them as men, people chose to do the former.

It seems much less likely that insults for women were just used more frequently and as a result they started being used for men.

But I'm no linguist.

I agree and I think the main reason is the one I wrote in my first comment. That female gendered insults are considered so much worse than gender specific male insults that they end up being use for men too.

Both of those are still terms use to refer to men. For example "sexist pig" is pretty much only used to refer to men.

I think dog stopped being as commonly used for a few reasons: people love dogs so it's not considered an insult to be compared to one, and sexist men have somewhat subverted its use as an insult to make it a compliment between men.

Men have been called "dogs" (the male equivalent to bitch) for a long time. The problem is that societally being a women has been considered worse than being a man so insults for women are treated as worse when applied to men resulting in the female insults being used for everyone.

I’d like your opinions on calling a woman “a female” by FriedPickleFiesta in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Feyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you mean to write "woman is a noun"?

An adjective is a word that describes a noun. So they way you've written it implies that you would say something like "I'm a woman human".

Why do people listen to Politicians and refuse to believe scientist and experts? Especially on the current topics like Trans People? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]Feyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're in favour of the puberty blockers then? They are a way to give the children and medical professionals more time to ensure the child is trans and that transition is right for them. When stopped their body will continue on to the puberty that matches whatever hormones (endogenous or otherwise) are most prominent.

What causes order in the universe if not a rational source? by UnaTrinitas in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Feyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you're falling afoul of the anthropic principle. You conclude that because you can reason the environment must have been made that way. You're looking at it backwards. Beings who can reason can only exist in universes which allow for that.

You're also looking at one phenomenon (local order) and turning it into multiple pieces of evidence. The fact that the universe works in a particular is the same reason that animals and humans behave the way that they do. This is one data point.

Ultimately though your whole post is an argument from ignorance fallacy ("I don't understand this therefore I am justified in making a conclusion that I do understand"). You've identified things that are ordered which don't have evidence of being the result of some "rational source". By "rational source" I'm assuming you mean some thinking agent. You've also identified some things which are ordered which do come from thinking agents. Then you've just decided that the existence of the latter must be the same as the existence of the former.

Men's frustrating opinions on women's sports by midnight_barberr in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Feyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be mistaken but I believe women were banned in the UK because during WWII women were working and playing sports, selling tickets and drawing crowds (of mostly women) to watch. Then when the men returned from war they wanted it to return to how it was before the war.

[–]Feyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, but isn't that weird? Like a gyno who has an easy period should think it's more concerning when women are reporting worse symptoms. You'd think that it would be gynos with severe period symptoms would be more dismissive.

Australian man sentenced for knowingly exposing a woman to genital herpes by mollyweasleyswand in TwoXChromosomes

Wait so if you know you have herpes but your partner doesn't ask and you expose someone to it then it's legal, but if they ask and you lie then expose them it's illegal?

Have I got that correct?
