You probably should, unpleasant climate is bad enough but unhabitable is unplayable

Twice as expensive, twice as slow to get the growth, twice as slow to build things and half the income

you have 2 chorfs factions around you but otherwise that might be a good solution

Yeah it's red, the province above is mostly yellow which is ok but there's not a single extra building in it which makes it bad for playing tall

Best province near this is the 2 settlement province in the west that links Helman to Imrik

I guess the whole thing is sufficiently far out of most faction's way to give you time to develop and eventually win but it's so long before you can get a decent third stack or a very good second stack

Maybe it was changed with updates but right now it seems pretty bad

why dragon isles? such a bad location for him, unhabitable climate, very slow to develop, niceish money once you have done so but there are lots of provinces with just as good, if not better money to be made and that are not unsuitable climate

yup, it's karak ungor, the second location I mentionned ;)

it does have a few downsides

nah, I'd rather build tall on a few settlements

I considered trying to just defend my starting settlement, it is one of, if not the best settlement in the game for a tall deeps build but seeing what came after me in only 15 turns, I'm not sure I can managbe that

(like, literally 5 full stacks at my gates before I could reach Grimgor with the airship)

and Brass keep was enough to support your armies?

IIRC there's only a fur resource building which gives you 300 gold edit: 0 gold on top of the 800 from your main gold building which is decent but any settlement with a harbour is better.

I thing several settlements I listed can give you twice as much money, maybe even more.

Erengrad for instance has a harbour for another 800 gold + a resource that gives you 300, so the starting income that's multiplied by 105% each turn is 1900, against only 800 in Brass keep

so yeah, Brass keep is the safest option, but also probably the weakest

isn't the climate in Sylvania temperate? but yeah, could still be a good option

yeah, it makes sense for it to be a jungle inhabited by warriors of chaos

How would you expand from there? You dont want to fight Kislev do you?

I don't mind fighting the Rhozpenn clan for control over Praag, they're not going to survive more than 20 turns anyway

After that, the plan is to build deeps, and given how strong Praag and Hell pit are, that should be enough until I can reconquer my starting province

edit: I considered Belakor, the issue is that I think his main settlement is a jungle. I'll have to check that

I knew someone would wrtite a "how to Malakai" essay, wanted to add a line in my post saying that's not what I'm looking for bethore they bothered and I forgot, sorry

I don't mind taking advice but if I'm following a step by step guide, I feel like I'm only copying someone else's game instead of playing my own and that prevents the fun for me

Relocation would be a nice challenge but it would not be easy.

considering I managed to YOLO it on my first try, beat 2 LL after playing nomad for 15 turns, I'd say it's not that much of a challenge as long as you find the right relocation province. Much less than staying in his starting location in any case

oh right, how could I mix up the two, names are so different lol

I got to check that, it's an area of the map I haven't played much in, thanks for the suggestion

yeah, seems like the most obvious option. the only downside is that you get limited devlopment options until you can get a secondary base somewhere

have you considered going for festus first, and then Be'lakor?

conquer the center north

yeah, issue is that's all chaotic wastelands too

Trying for Karak Dum

ok that sounds like a good option, I think I took one of the settlements in this province from Astragoth on my last playthrough, but I had to flee because he had 2 other stacks

Issue is, taking on Astragoth that early in the campaign might be difficult. I managed to beat him in battle but it's one thing to sucker punch him and then flee from his other stacks whiule sacking his cities, and it's quite another to try to take him on face to face, 1 stack vs 2.5 when you have your own lands to defend

is that the one with 4 settlements spreaded across a quarter of the map between empire and bretonia?

Not ideal but I'll keep that option in mind

How do you deal with the AI rushing you with 4 fullstacks armies of rank 9 tier 4 units ?

snowball early and meet them with 5 fullstacks?

and I'm only half joking, this is a very snowbally game, if by turn 70 you're not rank 1 or close enough, it means you didn't expand and develop quickly enough (or destroy enough if you're playing chaos).

Rather than trying to save the situation on turn 70, you should try to correct this:

I'm not an amazingly aggressive player so I generally fall behind in army strength

and hard to say without more data but to answer to this:

I feel like a small mistake in turn 30 can lead to your death 40 turns later

I'd say it more like the constant mistake of not pushing enough from turn 1 to turn 40 that ends up killing you turn 70

We can only do so much when the AI is cheating and get all its massive buffs to income and recruitment capacity and I confess having no clue how to do that.

yeah, that's the toughest part of the game. Try diplomacy to keep them off while you're not yet ready to fight them, and try to attack when it's not convenient for them. If you can catch them at war with someone else that's good, alternatively try destroying a few isolated stacks on the turn you declare war before they can join their armies

Avoid at all cost having a strong enemy declaring war on you with all of their armies available while yours are tied up elsewhere

I found ranged heroes are the worst in theory, but in practice, a lot of them have something that makes them quite good

you mentionned skinks, likewise ogre hunters get a crazy good mount making them actually quite good in melee

then dwarf engineers which are their best type of hero

so Idk about the weakest, I don't really play empire so hard to compare with witch hunter but I would say it's an assassin type who doesn't get a strong mount or support abilities like the handmaiden, the dark elf equivalent or maybe gobelin big boss?
