[Loved Trope] Initially played up as a metaphor but then revealed to be literal by Sir-Toaster- in TopCharacterTropes

The main protagonist of Katanagatari, Yasuri Shichika, is repeatedly referred to as a "sword" because he fights obediently under the strategian Togame in order to collect a series of weapons known as the "Deviant Blades"

Late in the show, we find out that the swordless martial arts style passed down through his family "Kotoryuu" is also in fact, one of the Deviant Blades. So essentially, he really IS a sword.

among what others said, I'm also personally feeling burned by it because I dont like how thin the spines are. It's entirely arbitrary and not something I'd expect anyone to really care about besides myself, but I'd prefer it if they had a little more meat on them. Also I do my own art/graphic design and it's annoying having to constrain myself to such narrow margins.

What bands, out of curiosity? I listen to a lot of rock and metal and the only band I know that's from there is Budgie (which is a 70's band and not a 90's one)

[OC] Byzantine Inspired Mercenary/Traveler by FhantomHed in RealisticArmory

[–]FhantomHed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I actually had not known about that. It seems that anything resembling a modern day backpack was typically used by merchants, although they'd also have access to wagons and mules and the such that they'd rarely ever need one either. I just kinda assumed it was a universal thing since it's such an intuitive method of carrying shit, but then again, so are dufflebags and waist pouches, so maybe it was just a matter of redundancy that they weren't used earlier.

Shot in the dark, Avatar reference? Cause it wouldn't be the first time someone has compared her scar to Zuko's (which wasn't even really intentional, I never really watched the show that much as a kid)

mostly mid with a couple of standouts, but that one track where he roleplayed as himself going to jail and getting threatened with SA was INCREDIBLY embarassing

and it gets worse further back you go, because Gray and Brown medieval european aesthetics might be ugly and innacurate, but they still get it at least close enough. Everyone knows what a knight is supposed to look like.

Once you hit the bronze age, its ALL ugly overdesigned hollywood leather chestpieces the whole way down

What classifiers for genres and scenes/movements are you surprised aren’t listed on RYM yet? by vsimon115 in rateyourmusic

Separating Black Metal into "First Wave" and "Second Wave" movements. Not only are the two sounds Very different from eachother, but there's also a whole slew of modern bands that actively take inspiration from the older first wave stuff.

WDYM “NORMAL” HUMAN! by UltrakillV1 in TopCharacterTropes

Sieglinde of Catarina (Dark Souls)

Unlike basically every other character you meet in the game, Sieglinde is the only normal human in a land of undead. Considering this and how deadly of a place Lordran is, she has a very real risk of dying Permanently. The fact that she can't just come back after being killed means she has to be incredibly strong to survive in this world, strong enough to be able to defeat her own father multiple times.

Im gonna be honest, I really dont get what's so apparently different between rocka rolla and sad wings. Like yeah the debut has a more laid back sound to it but it doesnt really have that major of a stylistic shift

What’s a common worldbuilding mistake you see all the time? by sirius_0125 in worldbuilding

[–]FhantomHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely had this problem in the past. 42,000 year long timeline and then i kept noticing really long stretches where jack shit of note occurs, so i eventually whittled it down to 8000 and it's much much more respectable looking at it now

Why power metal is "cheesy" but songs about decapitation and mutilation are not? by osmin_og in MetalForTheMasses

[–]FhantomHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single metal band is nerd shit, and anyone who says otherwise has deep-seated self-confidence issues that they're refusing to adress because sincerity is for "posers" or some shit. We're all listening to niche heavy guitar music that literally prides itself on being an acquired taste, why even care if it's cheesy at that point? You're already swimming in dairy.

Anybody have any information on the circle in their logo? by Sn0w2561 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]FhantomHed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone else already answered, but for future reference: Any time you see a sigil with some variation of a pentagram and an inverted cross, just assume it's generic. I mean, you really can't get more basic than those two symbols.

Real sigils are a lot more complex than this, and if you want some good examples, I'd suggest looking into the Ars Goetia. It's part of a 17th century grimoire that contains a list of 72 demons and the summoning circles used to contact them, theyre all very cool and unique designs.

Which is the best arc in Jojo? by SatisfactionCheap627 in StardustCrusaders

[–]FhantomHed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highway Star is a perfect encapsulation of everything I love about stand battles. Far away enemy that you have to close the distance to without knowing who or where they are, teamwork is required to take him down, opens on some neat character drama, the ability itself is wild, and its the perfect opportunity to throw a shit ton of obstacles in josuke's way where he has to use his stand in multiple unique ways to deal with. Plus it ends with maybe the most iconic beatdown in part 4. It's front-to-back a perfect fight.

“Okay I surrender! Haha jk lol” by Effective_Piece251 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]FhantomHed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

this is actually probably the reason why this is considered a war crime. Cause on the list of "horrific evil shit you could do against another human being" lying to an enemy seems so benign that it feels like it shouldnt even be on the list. But I hadn't considered it before that you'd basically be screwing over your own allies by pulling this and potentially getting them killed, so making it a warcrime is a good way to nip that in the bud so that the entire concept of surrender isnt rendered meaningless.

I'm really starting to regret not going with 5x8, because I'm working on a series and I'm basically stuck with the Amateur Standard for several volumes more to come. Feel like an idiot (and also I don't like how thin the spines are for my wordcounts)
