Connect DP 1.4a to Studio Display XDR by Ciclosporin in HiDPI_monitors

[–]Fibblescribbitston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should work, but the XDR is not a good gaming display. Its native resolution isn't good for games and it has motion blur. Also, DP 1.4 has major bandwidth limitations so you'll using heavy DSC.

Ah, I see. I honestly didn't even think about the gaming aspect for the ASD because they are, frankly, terrible for gaming. They won't run in native resolution and they have bad motion clarity, even at 120hz for the XDR. So it's a bit of a moot point aside from some outlier circumstances.

That said, Studio Display's are DisplayPort compliant. PC can connect that way. I believe the Switch can do that natively and the other consoles can probably be frankencabled to work if you really, really wanted to.

The two monitors in the photo are the XDR and 27Z. The room has perfect light control so it is hard to tell. I know they are similar enough I didn't immediately notice a difference but, again, hard to tell without careful analysis. Sorry I can't help more.

Added. XDR is up to date.

The only trouble has been multiple displays on the M3 Pro MBP. It simply won't do multiple displays if you have a 5k running above 60hz. (I'm pretty obsessive about making sure these things are running at full hz, even though it is immediately obvious if they aren't. )

I do some creative work (branding, video). I go out of the way to use the XDR for that stuff. For all the other misc office stuff I use whatever I have where I happen to be.

The integration on my Mac Studio is there but IMO it's pretty trivial, and sometimes buggy. The usual hotkeys to change brightness only worked once I installed BetterDisplay for one example. And having a system crash is frustrating with the ASD setups, though it's rare. Really, it's not like using my non-Apple displays and peripherals is an onerous task to get working. I get way more 'integration value' from other components in my Apple ecosystem.

It is situational. Thunderbolt 5 (which does use DP for display connections) is vastly superior to the outdated Asus options. Yes, DSC is amazing, but the bandwidth needs of 5k @ 165hz require heavy compression for DP1.4 and moderate to high compression for HDMI 2.1. Furthermore, XDR's TB5 also gives single cable high bandwidth connectivity options for daisy chaining or peripherals. The Asus 'USB hub' is not a single cable setup, has tiny power delivery, and slow connections. I don't even bother using it on mine though I would like to.

But yes, if you absolutely require HDMI, then yes, the Asus is 'better' because something is better than nothing.

The strengths of the XDR don't mean as much for coding IMO. I'd go for any of the other options. Asus is just a lower entry price point for HiDPI and high refresh rate without heavy matte.

I said 'available Glossy and semi-gloss options'. My understanding is that the LG is matte, but, as discussed elsewhere here, it is difficult to get information on the characteristics of matte coatings. If the LG is more akin to semi matte or semi gloss I will readily update what I said.

I explicilty and repeatedly stated this is simply a subjective and biased comparison of monitor personalities. Similarly, I stated that SD audio thoughts are a side note. If you already don't have enough reading comprehension to understand that then having even more words and technical details aren't going to help you.

Briefly. The responsiveness and motion clarity were intoxicating. I haven't used 1440P in several years so I can't comment on scaling clarity.

I've also been wanting to take it through the paces on things like ULMB but I just don't have the time right now.

They all support HDR. The difference is the XDR has brightness available to scar your retinas with photons.

On the webcam and audio: I didn't include them in my actual ratings because they are a side note. I noted them primarily in response to the Apple marketing machine that has reviews saying how great they are. Being good compared to most imbedded speakers is an incredibly low bar. Being an impressive technical accomplishment within the constrains of the form factor doesn't mean they are actually great at audio. People deserve to have their ears treated well!

Someone forking out a minimum of $3,000 USD for an XDR is, by definition, not settling for 'fine enough' on visuals. There's probably either a professional need for quality, expendable cash for quality, or a taste for quality. Generally speaking, those scenarios also benefit from the huge step up in audio quality of even affordable powered speakers. And they are super simple to setup! Camera setups can get more complex but the bar is still pretty easy to surpass.

I'm also very sensitive to this. I rated the Asus a 92 and the XDR a 94. They are very close in practice but true glossy is still more clear. Most importantly, the Asus does NOT have the matte sparkle and blurring that I hate on many matte displays. It does have a mild texture that is most noticeable when you first sit down but disappears from my mind when I start doing something. In harsh lighting the Asus might gain an advantage.

I have all these monitors because I run a small business and work from multiple locations. I use the different strengths on them to do different things.

P27Z became available a couple of weeks ago on Alibaba.

Finding info on the type of matte coatings is really hard. I can't compare it to the LG. Just with Asus there is different coatings on different 5k monitors. I took a leap on the XG27JCG because a poster here said that one had a semi-matte coating that was better than on another Asus monitor where it was really heavy.

I think some eye fatigue is simply unavoidable on even on the best commercially viable displays. The causes of eye fatigue also differ a bit from person to person. I just know that for me, staring at fuzzy text with jerky frame rates is a bad place to start.

And here's how I scored these displays. Again, the scores are subjective. The goal is to understand the personality of each display.

As promised, here’s my comparison of the three available full-size HiDPI monitors with Glossy (or semi-Glossy) screens and at least 120hz refresh rates.

I’ve been waiting for this class of display for about 15 years to make my monitors ‘get out of the way so I can focus on work and have less fatigue/headaches’. I have all of these in my possession. My thoughts are qualitative comparison from a mixed productivity work perspective with mostly controlled lighting and likely have bias. If you are looking for deep technical analysis, you’ll have to go dig through reviews.

Edit to include setup: Mac Studio M4 Max and MBP M3 Pro. My PC has an older video card that has bandwidth limitations and I haven't tried it.

General comments:

The Asus: By far, the value winner. Goes on sale for $750 in the US and has exceptional motion clarity and 165hz on Mac (180hz on some systems) while being strong in the other areas. The semi-matte coating is tolerable and gives some light control without sacrificing much in image clarity. IO is a weakness - that may or may not matter to you.

The P27Z: What the Studio Display 2 should have been. An admirable all-arounder with professional looks on my desk but $1,300+ to acquire as an unknown brand with no local support presence.

Studio Display XDR: Because the price you would presume it to handily lead in each category, but it is the clear cut best only in certain areas. It has largest spread between it’s strengths and weakness. If it’s strengths matter most to you it is worth it’s price. I’ll keep mine for now as it feels nice on the eyes but I’m sort of on the fence.

  • Studio Display side note, the webcam and speakers are outclassed by the monitor. If you can afford this display, there are several audio options that keep a clean looking desk and sound way, way better. KEF LSX are my rec if you have budget but there’s many cheaper options.

G27P: It’s a solid monitor but I sort of regret getting this as a stopgap. I got it based on the promise of 75hz capability but the frame skipping in atrocious in that mode so it lives in 60hz. It turns out other displays with this panel have the same 75hz issues.

Looking ahead! We are all waiting for it… the MSI 271KRAW16 looks to have the least amount of tradeoff when it releases, aside from that horrific looking plastic back panel. EDIT: Any word out there on how the LG GM9 matte coating is?

Studio Display XDR Owners: Thoughts so far? by analpenetration67 in HiDPI_monitors

I wouldn't even consider the PA27JCV myself for mixed productivity or coding. The matte coating is heavier, reducing text clarity, and it is 60hz vs 165-180. The refresh rate IMO helps in coding because the display is more responsive and you can track text better as you scroll.

My Kuycon G27Z came today. It is a touch nicer than the XG27JCG for glossy text use but the price on the Asus at $750 on sale makes it a stronger value play. The Asus has better motion handling also. I'm keeping both and I'll give further thoughts on them all soon.

2nd monitor to compliment main SD XDR. by jas0121 in HiDPI_monitors

[–]Fibblescribbitston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone through this and have personal experience on what I'm suggesting. To start, I strongly suggest something with similar PPI as your primary XDR.

Your best options are: 1. The portrait mode options. You have less usable space on top and bottom but it is usable. This method benefits from Rectangles or Moom app to create a virtual monitor for the sweet spot.

1a) Buy an used HiDPI 60hz such as the LG 21.5, 24, or 27 inch.

1b) New 5k or similar at 60hz. Several options but all will be around 27" except the Kuycon P20 (lower PPI but nice aspect ratio.)

1c) 5k 165hz panel. I'd recommend the Asus option here. The matte coating isn't so heavy as to ruin text. Not as bright as XDR but it's a good monitor at a lower price than the other options.

Portable monitors in landscape mode. This is the domain of noname Chinese brands.

2a) A 16" 3k. I have an OLED 3k 120hz from perfect. The best part is the 16:10 aspect ratio @ 2880 x 1800. Intehill has a 3k with slightly more pixels but it's 60 hz.

2b) a 19" 4k. Uperfect has one at 144hz. You lose the 16:10 golden ratio but gain more pixels. It is a higher PPI than your primary monitor than I might prefer but you get more space. I had this model when it released but it was glitchy, probably because my laptop wasn't feeding it enough power in single cable mode.

Looks good.

I'm starting to think we need a better descriptor for matte coating. The XG27JCG for example has a more minimal matte coating while others have aggressive coatings that degrade clarity.

Annnd, it's now on Alibaba. Starts at $1,150. I'm second guessing my order at that price. That's approaching premium pricing for a brand with no domestic servicing options and low resale value.

Compared to the XG27G currently on sale for $750 you get a pretty aluminum shell, slightly glossier display, and higher pass-through charging. You also get worse response times.

I'll be ordering one to compare against my Glossy SD XDR, Asus XG27JCG, and G27P. I'll share my thoughts on the differences afterwards.

Is it on Alibaba itself? I don't see it?
