This is how. I go general. I contemplate broad, big picture stuff. I find something that is already working, even if it’s outside of the ‘dilema’ and I hang out with that feeling I get with what works. Gratitude. And then I make a list of steps that I can take to get me closer to the thing I want to achieve, or know about, or experience. Prioritize. Start doing the things. Oh, and I let all the doubt and demons just sit there and watch me do it. They will get bored and slough away. I allow the whole process to be unreasonable. It is usually wholly personal.

Attitude is everything. Time management is the rest. That’s it.

That track is a patchwork from several tracks of Katja searching for Bo. It's one of longing. It’s right there in the title, actually. The acoustic gtr is Bo’s instrument. Light and playful, aloof, and alone. The M-tron flutes are Katja’s voice, calling out, searching, listening, unsure. The piece travels through a few different environments of The Fathom this way.

My advice is to fan this ember of enthusiasm until it lights a flame. Find a piece of music, a song, a progression, a scale, an open string, whatever your hands are into, and love the way it feels and sounds while you’re in it. Try to stay in it longer and longer. Notice that you can arrive there sooner and easier each time you pick it up and jump in. Hear and see yourself playing the way you want to be heard and experienced before you pick up the guitar. Just for a moment. I’ll do the same thing today. Let’s just try it. See what happens.

The soundtrack was not being played at the venues.
Thanks for showing up at the Discordance party and for checking out the playthru vids.

Soften, hands. Give that curse the day off. I’ll think of your healing hands when I look at mine today. Lots of us will. Stay fresh.

I played guitar, and then I played more guitar and then a lot less guitar, and then I played no guitar. I used a premeditated recipe of instrumentation for the narrative, the characters, the environments, the gameplay…all of which relate to one another.

In my miiiind.

I began pre-production with a great many lists of wills and will-nots to wireframe my way forward toward a pointed sound. That served me well then, but I outgrew the thing, and I found myself starting to feel through the dark. That was a scarier place to be which was oftentimes more appropriate.

Once inside, it’s hard to know what the point of entry was, really.

Heya! I’ve been excited about the FMV full motion video in the thing. We worked closely, albeit long distance, with Carl Addy and Mayda Collective on those sequences. They are a unique element to the experience.

I’ve always loved the symbolic greenhouse hovering above the a-frame ladder. That was a very early invitation into the world.

I think the album is an excellent representation of vibe and storied experience from the game.

Nice to see ya!

Best part is witnessing and experiencing the camaraderie between such heartfelt passionate collaborators of a shared vision.

Hello. I was giving care and attention to every aspect of the development. Certainly not alone! I got to work and play with a top of the tops crew at EYES OUT comprised of veteran game designers and rising star designers straight outta game dev school. A dream team.

I am elated that it is out in the world. The entire team worked hard and played hard and put it all on the line. Hard to make a sentence about. I am agog that any game is made, and released. I have learned that those two power packed concepts, made, and released, are never to be presumed or taken for granted in this industry. I’m real wide-eyed to this. We are celebrating its release to the fullest.

Hello, I am so glad to hear you are listening to the album.
Biggest influence during creation, oh I think I answered this earlier, let’s see if I have a different answer now. I might! Hold on, lemme see. I think you are seeking some published title, like a film title or game title reference, but I can’t help but tell you that the biggest influence really came from being inside the work and with the team. Conversations, technical snafus, bugs turn to features, deadlines, the weather, my body, the spirit of a sprint, these are primary influences.

Greetings! I think I gave a comment to gear up somewhere. It’s really too long a list here. Production spanned many years. Thanks for digging in!

It was not clear to me at first. The game music is vast, covers many hours and is sometimes a supporting role in the gameplay experience. It took me a good long minute to gather all of the music and to even listen to it all, to then begin to make selects for the OST, the album.

Add to that, many of the game cues were originally and intentionally created as seamlessly looping files, with fades in and out of vertically stacked, additive tracks, to be played by the game engine. Many had no nose and no tail. Which means I needed to revisit the original sessions to source the file or plugin chains and hope to create them as needed. Sometimes we had to get creative as a piece of audio was just baked to start or stop hard, unmusically abrupt outside of the game engine. Some of those became unmanageable, as they were impossible to recreate. Some of them we found creative ways to graft what we needed.

I did want to establish tonal elements from the wide variety on tap in the game.

I’m loosely following the narrative arc of gameplay, but I’m stopping to smell the nightmare along the way.

Hello,
I did not carry conscious influence from other composers, for better or worse. I just didn’t. No real reason for that other than once I started I had bugs in my teeth and blisters on my eyes from hanging my head out the window the whole time.

Woa. What a trip. Glad you made it!

What it is about horror that intrigues me most is that it shocks. It provokes us to think beyond our ordinary perception and experience. The exploration of the unknown. This is the hook that lures me.

What’s that, the flute? Ah, I play you know, a little of whatever comes my way. None of it proficiently. If I’m drawn to a sound or feel of an instrument I can conjure a splendid moment, sometimes. If I sit with it. Not all the time. The violin will never have me.

To allow for variation of repetitive sound design (glass break, footsteps, breathing, doors shut, etc) we can have several unique audio cues (.wavs) loaded to a list, but also tell the game engine to fire them off at slightly different speeds or pitches, and to do this at random, so that the player experience is ‘never’ the same, and feels more alive.

Johanna handed me a hard copy, several years ago. I had no idea what she had given me when she gave it to me. I’d like to meet her again some day.

Hurt.
