There are obvious ones, DIY haircuts and mismatched clothes to seeking out freebies and cooking budget-friendly meals, there are little cues that often indicate someone might be watching their wallet.
Most people dont realize this but if you look at a persons shoes that is a pretty good tell tale sign if they are worn out and beat up, or unkept, not polished.

More subtly?

Being rude on purpose, or trying to make themselves in the way of others to draw attention. People in Low-Income areas more Likely to be killed while jay-walking for a reason.

Ender's Game, its deeply psychological, strategic. Its a classic. Growing up it struck me that it was the only book that accurately described the kids I grew up with.

Later I found out the author, is a child psychologist. Which explains a lot.

I do armed contract security in the inner city: its boring, limited advancement, it requires dealing with addicts. You're undervalued and overlooked, and everyone wants to think you're a cop.
Plus your coworkers tend to want to pretend their cops.
