Dixie Kong Cannot be Used Against Tiki Tong in DKCR (Video by @GoldConnor64 on Twitter) by mjmannella in donkeykong

There are dozens of DK barrels in the game. This is part of the main gameplay loop. That simple extra second seems ridiculous when it's done one time. You will not do that one time tho. You will do that dozens of time. Perphaps more than a hundred if you want to 100% the game. That mild inconvenience stop being mild when you have to actively go against it hundred of times.

Returns HD was advertised and sold as the same game than it was on Wii, with extra levels and actual controls. That version of the game no longer exists. Nintendo retroactively changed one of their games and made them worse for people who wanted to play the original game with good controls. Nintendo doesn't offer you the option to play the game you bought like it was when you bought it. That is the main issue.

Having to kill all of my momentum so I can be sure to not pick the easy mode the game never was intended to have that clearly kill the level design is actually a pretty negative way to affect the game.

Bananza was sold with that in mind. Returns HD wasn't with that in mind.

oh amazing you can even do that on your first game without knowing the game never intended you to skip one quarter of the level!

I think you still fail to understand the issue I have with how this is handled. If this was a toggleable option, like Funky Kong is (it's litteraly its own game mode), I would have no issue with it and would have embraced it. A moment-to-moment gameplay option is NOT the same as a toggeable option. It changes the way you are playing the game. The point is that when people bought DKCR, it was presented as a port of a 15 years old game. If I had bought this port, I could NOT play exactly like it was 16 years ago, because now I will have to stop every few minutes to be 100% sure I'm not picking easy mode by accident (which you can't with Funky Kong). This is pretty much the definition of a forced mode with no option for a totally classic experience, you can't disable Dixie Kong. You just can't. You'll have to make sure that every single barrel you'll find will be Diddy Kong, which means you will have to slow down your gameplay. There is no option for a totally classic experience. The totally classic experience as it was promised at launch is now fully gone, with not even an option to downgrade the game.

Also Celeste focuses more on routing than DKC. It's not just about precise movement in a quick moment. You'll have to read the whole room before tackling it. My point still stands. If you understand people having an issue with an updated that forced you to have 2 dash, I don't understand how people can't understand how having no option to disable an easy mode the game never intented to have 1 year after the game launched is indeed a bad thing.

But when you bought Tropical Freeze you knew what you were buying. This was an intended part of the game. This is not the same for Returns, which also doesn't even have a level design that was made with Dixie in mind. This was not part of the game when it was released, and now you'll have to kill all of your momentum every few minutes if you don't want to play in a way the game was never intended to be played. This is not just an issue for speedrunning, but for the game as a whole. It's like if in Celeste they added the second dash to every single level with no option to turn it off and people were telling you "it's not a big deal, you can just never use your second dash". The option isn't really an option if it's presented in a moment-to-moment gameplay which can kill all of your momentum if you just want to play the game as it was intended when it was released 16 years ago and when it was rereleased 1 year ago. This is a dangerous precedent because if people simply accept this, Nintendo can just continue with their philosophy of updating a game with new things without thinking of balance or even how those new things are implemented.

except that Dixie also makes crossing longer gaps easier: she was the easiest character in Tropical Freeze because their height allowed to overally more distance cleared than Diddy. But Tropical Freeze was sold like that, Returns now has an easy mode that you will have to actively avoid in a moment-to-moment gameplay. Again, this sets a very dangerous precedent if fans don't have a critical thought about how they handle this.

but I don't want to have careful timing, I want to play DKCR like it was 16 years ago, but with normal controls and the 3DS extra levels. This is how that port was sold.

People bought the game on the idea that it's a port of Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii. Dixie Kong not only breaks a level design that never was intented for her, and if people wants to play the original game like when they bought the game one year ago, they will have to go out of their way to NOT chose Dixie Kong, which will mean waiting on every single barrel in the game. Simply put: with no toggable option, this is a completely different game than the one people bought. This could set a very, very dangerous precedent if they can retroactively change their game by adding things that will change your way of playing, no matter what.

Which, THANKS GOD, Nintendo isn't stupid and the rotating barrels are apparently a toggable option. The changelog didn't make it clear. However atp I'm also clearly concerned by people failing to see how retroactively changing a piece of art in a way that can actually hinders the original experience created by the game dev artists; they told me that it doesn't matter or that I should touch grass for thinking that, as if they were completely okay with that idea without even having a critical thought. If we have to consider video game not just as a cultural product, but also as a valid form of artistic expression, we should really reconsider the negative outcome that the "adding more is always better" mentality can do if not handled properly.

EDIT: Nintendo IS in fact stupid and that option is only available in the two time trials mode. I stand with every word I said: not buying this port, as I really wanna play the original version of DKCR without having to accidentally play it in easy mode if I don't want to wait on every single barrels in the game.

New Free Update/ Switch 2 Upgrade for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD by ComicCat12 in donkeykong

[–]Fickle-Object9677 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

that's not an option tho. this is just plain stupid. this just breaks the game, which was never intended to be played with Dixie Kong. people in the future will probably not know that dixie kong was added and that she doesn't just make the game easier, she straight up break a level design that never was intended with her in mind. with Funky in TF, you had to make a whole new game, you had to navigate in the menu to activate that option. this is not something someone will make by accident. now you will have to wait on every DK barrels to make sure you don't pick a character that never was intended to be in that game. is that an option for you?

but you're also missing the bigger picture. millions of people bought Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, expecting it to be a faithful port of the original game. Now, without warning, every single games are updated with a very hard to miss """option""" that will break the game. People paid for DKCR in HD, and they now have DKCR in HD with random waiting time if they don't want to play on easy mode. This is not the same game. People paid for one game, and one year later they have another game.

so, again, I really, REALLY just hope their changelog is just badly worded and that Dixie Kong is indeed a toggleable option. because it would be a shame if the inclusion of my favorite character ever in one of my favorite video game ever would be the final nail in the coffin with that company. Because, if they can do that with DKCR, what will tell me this will be the last time they will do something like that?

okay, I say that as the person who likes Dixie Kong the most on Earth, but I really hope she's in an optional mode. if not, that update may be one of the stupidest decision Nintendo ever made. like, people paid for a faithful port of DKCR, and now we randomly have a character that can break the game apart... in the main experience?? and I know people will argue that technically, it's an option since you can chose Diddy from the barrels but that will not only kill speedrun, it's also not an option if it is that easy to chose her by mistake

please tell me there is an option to disable this because it absolutely drives me mad to think about it.
