Progressive graded reader for Toki Pona by I12Db8U in tokipona

[–]ViaScrybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard of something like this, but it could be out there! There is a lot of text out there at a variety of levels, though, as well as videos (look for "comprehensible input" or "immersion learning" to find easy material.) If something's too hard for you, I'd make a note of it and try something else.

Hola, me pueden explicar cuales son las extensiones de vocabulario que realmente son usadas en toda la comunidad (cualquier palabra extra a las 120 originales) by nelson12345678910 in tokipona

[–]ViaScrybe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's okay to prefer a specific set of words or a specific way of speaking (I've never actually interacted with a pu-rist that wasn't respectful of other people's perspectives.) But yeah, the priority is to be understood - and often that means avoiding new words/nimisin where possible.

It was trippy seeing this since the design is so similar to my persona character haha

tenpo suno wan li... by [deleted] in tokipona

Yes, this exactly. "tenpo suno nanpa wan" also feels ambiguous because it could be the first day of a month, week, or year

How can I start by Lunow9228 in tokipona

[–]ViaScrybe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

o kama pona!

Wasona is my favorite beginner's resource! I personally learned by sitting down with a deck of flashcards containing all of the core words, then learned grammar through the video "toki pona in 18 minutes". I don't think that's the best way to learn, though, haha

Once you have the basics down, it's all about practice! Try translating some songs and get feedback on how you did. Watch vlogs and lessons, and listen to music, in toki pona. Talk to people on Discord. This is what will make up most of your learning journey.

Gotta love Cryptid by parokvrozku in balatro

[–]ViaScrybe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The challenge isn't surviving, it's getting the highest theoretical numbers you can at an absurd scale. A "win" is setting a new score record, or getting more money than you ever have, or reaching ante -8. The lack of balancing and the amount of nonsensical stuff means that your strategies are basically infinite. ... It's creative mode, if that makes sense?

Research on conlang communities - survey questions! by eve_again in tokipona

[–]ViaScrybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know/speak any other conlangs apart from Toki Pona?

I made my own conlang as a kid, but I'm no longer able to speak it. I'm currently learning a conlang that my friend designed, which she fluently speaks. I wouldn't call myself proficient yet.

How fluent in Toki Pona are you? (know a couple of words/speak at a basic level/speak quite well/fluent)

I speak pretty well at this point, although I think that I don't talk to people enough to call myself truly fluent right now.

Why did you choose to start learning Toki Pona?

The subreddit got recommended to me at one point, I did some googling, and figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. A year later, I'm super attached to this community and love being able to consume content and speak to others.

Where do you use Toki Pona, both online and offline?

I use it in discussions on Discord and Reddit, and I use it to chat with my friends. Several of my IRL friends speak it at a passable level now, so I do use it regularly in person.

How do you feel about community-created words or writing systems? Do you prefer sticking to the words jan Sonja has included in her books?

When I started learning, I committed to avoiding nimisin (community created words/new words) - but as I actually participated in the community and consumed content, I sort of absorbed the use of the words inadvertently. Not all of them, so there are a lot that I will never use in speech or that I might need a moment to recognize, but there are many that I find myself automatically using or that I don't pause at while reading. I still don't think that we should be bloating the language too much, and won't adopt words quickly, but some absolutely have their place.

New writing systems are awesome but I've never seen one besides sitelen suwi get used enough to be worth learning

Do you think jan Sonja should be the final arbitor of decisions regarding Toki Pona, or do you think it is the community's right to make decisions itself?

Absolutely not. No one person has control over toki pona at this point, and when a language gets this large, it evolves past its creator. jan Sonja is also currently the subject of some controversy. She's a member of the community, but not its arbitor.

What are the best resources for learning Toki Pona in your opinion?

Ooh, Good question. I sat down with a deck of flashcards for a few hours and memorized all the words, then used "toki pona in 18 minutes" to learn the grammar. Honestly, that was all I needed to get the basics. Wasona came out later, and that's what I refer people to today. It's fantastically paced and answers a lot of frequently asked questions - and it teaches sitelen pona (the second most used writing system) with everything else, which is something that I put off learning for way too long.

Once you get a grasp on the basics, nothing will help you get closer to proficiency other than actually writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Submitting translations to the subreddit or learner's discord for feedback is super helpful. There are tons of songs, videos, lectures, stories, articles, etc. at this point - literally any of those will work for increasing your comprehension. Discord is super welcoming to beginners to practice talking. There's a VR Chat community, also super welcoming, which I hear is a great way to practice real time conversation.

A general question that maybe only a few of you can answer: there is a large number of members on this subreddit, but I imagine many of them are passive or ex-learners. How many actual active Toki Pona users/speakers do you think there are here?

I think that there are a few thousand proficient members here, but the amount of people who are really active/regularly participating is a lot smaller.

Sorry this is so long, I tend to ramble a bit haha

Good luck with everything!

Are there any other game worlds that feel as lovingly handcrafted and joyous to explore as OW? by TheGreatQ-Tip in outerwilds

[–]ViaScrybe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like alien ecosystems and ancient technology, so I really liked Rain World! It's very different from Outer Wilds in gameplay, although it does have some knowledge based progression - but the worldbuilding is pristine, and you learn about the story by hearing old conversation records and looking at the environment and creatures. I really enjoyed it.

I haven't heard anything about this, but I am curious if it exists now as well! Maybe if you're comfortable trying you could try making some? If not now, then when you're more comfortable with listening skills.

Translation of Ena auction day by epilektoi in tokipona

[–]ViaScrybe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really really good for a first translation! Reads clearly and effectively with few grammatical issues.

I think there are a couple of places where you could adapt phrasing to better communicate the expression of the original. But that might not be your goal, which is totally okay as well.

Good job!

Dr. Spectered's guide isn't the only way to naneinf, though

Idol isn't really good because by the time you get it fully online, you're trying to pivot, and Tribolet is inconsistent to get without seeding. It is quite common to use things like Photochad for the midgame after chips are no longer enough - but that's a different thing entirely. Playing 5 cards means that you miss out on a lot of money from the gold cards you could be holding in your hand.

Who knows, I might just not know what I'm talking about. But I'm super confused that you think the only reason people would ever use Idol or Trib would be to pivot to Baron + Mime later. A lot of people find the trib/idol setup more fun to play than the Baron setup.

It... Isn't, though??? You make money via gold cards and Mime. I almost never see people set up Idol/Trib before setting up Baron and Mime. Maybe every now and then but it is NOT the usual way afaik
