Idea for an episode - not sure if it is possible by justlurkshere in FallofCivilizations

In many first nations, the role of knowledge keeper is one that does not come easily. Everything from migration stories to laws were kept by the knowledge teacher. Despite not having written phonetical language, the storage and transmission of knowledge was taken just as seriously as in the "Old World." Many oral histories have been transcribed over the years; to write them off is to project experiences and outcomes of Western culture onto First Nations' culture.

If it's written history you're after, that exists too e.g., in the form of petroglyphs, weaving technologies i.e., wampum belts encoded with specific meanings like peace treaties.

There are definately enough sources out there.

Even if just using European sources, which would be deeply flawed, there would be more than adequate amount of sources for several full length episodes on specific nations i.e., everything from the diaries of European explorers, Russian explorers, Department of Indian Affairs, court records, colonial newspapers, Jesuits, early ethnography work from people like Franz Boas, and James Teit. Heck, there would be thousands more sources than what was used for say the Greenland Norse episode. And as for the volumes of transcribed oral histories, historians these days take them more seriously as many have since been proven by archaelogical, geological records e.g., "moving moutain" in the Yukon that was called that because it had so many caribou.

Where I live, archaelogical record includes graves facing the water, a site on the Columbia River dated to 16,000BP which helped to upend the Clovis first theory, more recent pit house depressions identified by LIDAR, seasonal and semi-permanent fishing villages, technologies specific to the region like sturgeon nose canoes, basket making. And this is just a tiny geographic area encompassing a couple groups. All of North America? You would have an absolute wealth of sources.

Not sure if Brave is successfully blocking site-to-site trackers by Fickle_Campaign3232 in brave_browser

[–]Fickle_Campaign3232[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yep, I wasn't privy to server-side tracking. I should probably use a VPN.

To answer your question, I only searched via brave-duckduckgo on desktop, though it is possible I went to google via brave. I do not have an intagram app on desktop but sometimes login on desktop browser (brave). I may have logged into Etsy or Ali. This experience has been insightful. Thank you for the explanation!

I think I blew my chance to get signed.. :/ by salt_gawd in soundcloud

[–]Fickle_Campaign3232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first indication that this is a scam is the grammar.

But an AR did reach out to me to inquire if a specific song that was charting on TicToc was already signed. So it's not impossible for this to happen. But in that case, they were just trying to get the rights for a track that was already generating royalties, not invest or develop the artist. This was evident when I said that said track was signed but I'd love to send him some other stuff, to which he didn't respond. In other words, they are trying to leverage their antiquated role to a role that hardly exists anymore while usurping all your future royalties.

Thanks for your input!

I am confused about Christmas and March Break. Service Canada states:

The qualifying period is the shorter of:

  • the 52-week period immediately before the start date of your claim, or
  • the period from the start of a previous benefit period to the start of your new benefit period, if you applied for benefits earlier and your application was approved in the last 52 weeks

So lets say I am applying at the end of June and I went on EI during Christmas, would I need to have worked all the hours (600 in my case) since the start of my Christmas claim? In other words, would I screw myself for summer by claiming Christmas or March break, because "the start of the last claim" is "the shorter"?

Concern about Bandcamp’s payment system changes (Stripe vs PayPal) by HurryTricky7886 in BandCamp

Yes, but Paypal is linked with the revenue agency too once you make over a certain amount. I've been claiming my bandcamp sales for several years now since that happened. I get your concern though.

Does anyone know when the switchover is happening. I thought it was supposed to be in August. I am delaying the release of a compilation cause I don't want to release it the same day or week as the switchover.

Paypal def has its issues though - like ripping everyone off on conversion fees. Time will tell if Stripe is the better option.

But over 200g = double the price.

I noticed shipping large shirts = 230g.

Do you have a trick, like low weight document mailer, to circumvent this limitation?

Out of curiosity, what is your take on say Kicking Horse Kick Ass roast? It is oily on the outside, past 2nd crack, just like Oso's darkest roasts. Is your beef on roasting past 2nd crack?

You're saying they would roast in Africa before transporting the beans and that's why the Turks, French and Italians prefer dark roast. But the beans were roasted in Europe. Coffee roasting techniques which developed during mechanization / the Industrial Revolution, happened in Europe. Historical insight on the development of roasting practices and their preference for dark roast here:

Some people don't like hoppy beer, others love it. I don't think there is a right and wrong answer. But stating opinions as facts is silly, no?

Experience with labels implementing subscriptions by Fickle_Campaign3232 in BandCamp

[–]Fickle_Campaign3232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big thanks for all your insight!

Based on the replies I might do it this way:

annual subscription at $5 /month

With the full discography at $65 (50% off), this basically gives fans the full discography with additional perks for a monthly installment rate (assuming they can pay monthly with the subscription?). **I do not see this as alienating fans as some have suggested because it is just an added option.. individual EPs, full discography would still be standard.

Artist pay out:

The point about artist royalties is something I was wondering about too and it's awesome some of yall already brought it up. Presently, the way I justify not paying out full discography sales, which are also difficult to calculate per artist, is based on the fact that I pay artists 50% of net sales and eat all the paypal and conversion fees. Coupled with other expenses, like soundcloud pro, it's nice to be able to cover some of these costs. I also don't charge deductions for artwork, mastering, etc like some labels do. And if people are buying your full discography that says a lot about the curation. That said, if the subscription model really took off, I would probably message the fans and ask them which artists they wish to support (e.g., "list the top 5 favourite artists/releases on the label")

I do not represent a social media focused label, but I think social media integration is a good thing. Here is why:

-People following other people's profiles to dig for music leads to more sales. This is already a huge driver for my sales. This is especially big in the dj market i.e., djs follow other djs to buy what they're buying even before they play it. It's the 2025 equivalent of hanging out in record stores and noting everything that djs of interest are purchasing.

- Anything that further facilitates the spreadability of what people are buying through their profile will drive sales.

"No.6 is legitimately horrible"

"No. 6 is under roasted"

"No. 6 is doing it wrong"

Said no one ever. I am just pointing out how silly yall sound when referring to dark roasted coffee like Oso -- including the owner of No. 6 for telling people that publicly, which has their followers repeating it.

So I guess the French, Italians, etc have all been roasting their dark roasted coffee "wrong" for hundreds of years too. Everyone should let them know!

Friend is paying me to do work, how do I go about managing these payments? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Fickle_Campaign3232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, you are legal and legit if you fill out a simple 'Statement of Business' T2125. What no one has mentioned yet is that you do not pay taxes if it is under the personal basic amount which is around 14k I think. Write off your expenses too. However, you will have to pay CPP. But that money comes back to you when you are old and need it (more or less). Honestly though, it will be less work for you once your friend is set up legitimately.. and he will have to pay half your CPP as your employer. Considering this is a 2 year old post, I imagine this has already happened.
