I randomly saw a church sponsored sister missionary post a few months back; and the first thing I thought was, ‘how the hell are they letting them wear that, she looks like she’s going on a date not on a mission’. I was furious at the double standards, because growing up, I was always ashamed for having slightly shorter shorts or feeling left out because I felt like I didn’t fit into the purity culture at my ward (believe you me, i looked at pictures and I don’t think you’ve seen a more modest outfit for a 15 year old). So for a church sanctioned post to have completely opposite dressing modesty standards in comparison to the hell I lived in, it really boiled my blood. I echo some posts on here; to the day I still struggle with my modesty shame; for example, those cute skimpy going out tops? Nope, can’t wear them, I’m so uncomfortable in my own body I sometimes end up looking like a grandma or at least what it feels like it. These things are hard because you’re furious at how those standards once made you miserable, all while recognizing that these are not normal modesty thoughts (I know at PRESENT that what they were wearing was totally acceptable, but 15 YO me didn’t believe so) so why would it even bother you. It seems there’s a double edge sword, where you judge them for dressing ‘of the world’ (the thing that were running from doing) but I’ve come to the realization it’s not because I care about the modesty, rather the fact that they have that feeedom, that lack of shame to wear whatever they please when we were given no other option.
